So why is that? Why is Canada superior? That IS the question. Now, SF, give me some links to listen to them online. I need to study up.
Brian, thanks for your interest. I am bummed that with the move to PPM we will no longer see these stations show up at all on our rankers, but so goes the world.
- 100.3 the Q (broad based rock station): www.theq.fm/?q=listen_live Seems to have more variety than say 'Arrow', live staff on weekends.
- Classic Rock 101.1 (Not one I've listened to much, but Comcast feels it worthy to be the ONLY Canadian station on our cable systems, short commercial interruptions): www.rock101.com/
- 95.3 FM "Virgin Radio Vancouver" - Like Jack, a new brand is spreading across Canada in the form of Virgin. I liked this station when it was 95/Crave and had friends tell me it was good as "Zed 95.3" - It's a hot AC with a dance bend to it. vancouver.virginradio.ca/ Yes, people work there weekends, I've called before on a visit.
- CBC Radio 2: Recently attracted controversy due to shifting to a broader-based music format, showcase largely Canadian content www.cbc.ca/radio2 - I sometimes hear "Drive" on my way home or "Morning" on the way to work. Despite not being able to call, the personalities actually show some *cough* personality and play a lot of unique music. Comparable to WXPN, KEXP or "The Current" public outlets in USA, probably.
Until recently, Canadian commercial broadcasters were forced to play around 50% non 'hits' on FM radio. This was an antiquated notion to protect AM stations put in place by CRTC. This has been lifted, but Can-Con rules still stand.
I feel like these stations are more like KZDX "99-9 the buzz" was in the late 90s, playing more cuts of familiar artists, but not always the latest hit single. Kept it fresh and still accessible. I haven't been able to listen to "the X" from Vernal much, sorry.
I guess I also appreciate that most Canadian stations still have a news department, either by law or choice. That part is somewhat unclear to me.
