KALL 910 had a full service format until 1991-1992, so my guess would be that the music was soft adult contemporary/MOR or something similar.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if the licenses for 720 and 1140 are surrendered to the FCC after March 1st. Everything that I've read in Radio Discussions and the posts from Audacy's Las Vegas CE in another radio discussion group have indicated that Audacy has no plans to move the transmitting sites, or diplex 720 and 1140 from another tower site. The audience for AM radio continues to shrink, and the number of AM stations is shrinking along with the dwindling audience numbers. There's also the perception among advertisers that "no one listens to AM radio anymore", and it's certainly not easy to shake that perception. Moreover, I'm sure it's not cheap to pay the electric bill for a 25 kW (days) station like KDWN. The ROI from 720 and 1140 may not be enough for Audacy to justify the cost of building new towers, or diplexing the signals from another location. I'm sure we'll know more about Audacy's plans after March 1st.

I'll give U92 and AM radio the same odds of making a comeback. KUUU has been on life support for months now. The problem is convincing Broadway Media to pull the plug.

I rarely listen to KNRS, but I'm pretty sure that Lee West's traffic reports on KSOP AM & FM are "live and local". Of course, Rikki Meece and the rest of the KSL traffic crew are the 800 pound gorilla of traffic reports along the Wasatch Front, and you're not likely to hear them mispronouncing any Utah highway or city names. 🙂

I'm pretty sure that KDYL/KKDS 1060 broadcast in AM stereo for several years; first as KKDS with the "All American Classics" format, then as KDYL during the station's adult standards era. By the time KDYL flipped to its "Real Oldies" format, I believe Ralph Carlson had discontinued AM stereo in favor of the Kahn CAM-D system. I'm almost positive that KFAM 700 (now KALL) also broadcast in AM stereo before the station was sold, and the beautiful music/easy listening format was dropped.

Audacy has announced that KDWN 720 and KXST 1140 will be signing off for good at Midnight, February 28, 2023. For the members of this board who are also DX'ers, KDWN 720 will be conducting a brief (10 minute) DX test at full 25 kW daytime power beginning at 23:59 Pacific Time (00:59 Mountain Time) on February 28th. The DX test information came from a post by the CE of Audacy Las Vegas in another radio discussion forum. If you don't have KDWN in your log because of adjacent channel interference from KSVN, February 28th will be your last (and probably best) chance to add it to your AM DX logbook. radioinsight.com/headlines/248648/audacy-to-sign-off-pair-of-las-vegas-ams/

Big Budah has joined the "KSL Today" team on KSL TV. As you'll no doubt notice in the Facebook video, he's wearing a 92.5 The Beat T-shirt while working out. fb.watch/iBzpfNamND/?mibextid=6aamW6So is he tracking mornings on 92.5, or has he left that position? He's still listed as the morning jock on the U92 page. As dspete said, it appears that Budah's job with KSL TV is part time. 925thebeat.com/onair/

I can't even begin to fathom the logistics that are involved in the day to day operations at Farnsworth Peak. It must take a small army of people just to keep the road plowed and passable in the winter, especially during heavy snowfall years like this one. I don't know if the engineers get to the site with their own vehicles or if transportation is arranged for them, but I'd imagine it's got to be a real chore getting to the peak's summit even in good weather. Even if I had the required training and education to work at Farnsworth, I don't think I could handle the drive to and from work every day because of my fear of heights. I remember the time I drove the road to Powder Mountain one summer, and I almost tossed my cookies on the drive down the mountain. I salute the professionals who work at Farnsworth Peak so we can enjoy broadcast radio & TV 24/7/365!👍

I think the current U92 format could best be described as "variety".😉 It's what happens when you try to be too many things to all people. It might work OK for public, community, and college radio stations, but not so much for a commercial radio station that depends on advertising revenue to pay the bills.
It could be that Broadway is preparing 92.5 for a format flip in an offbeat way, similar to what CA mentioned. I'm certainly not going to hold my breath waiting to find out, because Broadway Media is just as likely to try another U92 format tweak if the station's ratings continue to tank. 🙄

Speaking of KSL, has anyone heard anything about or observed how the station is handling its programming during the Skyview ransomware attack? I know that some radio stations have been having problems accessing the ABC Radio TOH news, and I've been wondering if the ransomware attack has affected KSL at all.

Other than keeping the heritage U92 brand alive and having a somewhat unique format in the Salt Lake City market, I can't think of any other reason why Mr. Hansen wouldn't care about KUUU's ratings. In fact, the ongoing format tweaks suggest to me that SOMEONE at Broadway Media is aware that U92 needs help; otherwise why even bother with format tweaks if ratings are of no concern? It's almost like being on a radio roller coaster ride: Broadway makes some changes that improves U92's numbers for a couple of rating periods; then the ratings tank again and some other tweak is tried. It's like they just keep throwing things at a wall, hoping that something will eventually stick. But as near as I can tell, it's been at least a decade since U92 was a major force with the coveted 18-34 demo.

Seriously? How much longer is Broadway Media going to continue the format tweak charade in an attempt to revive U92's glory days? Good grief, KALL-AM had better ratings than KUUU for the November and December rating periods! I realize that KALL's boost in ratings probably has a lot to do with the Utes and NFL games, but U92 is still in serious trouble, and Broadway seems oblivious to that fact. Whatever audience there was for hip hop 10-15 years ago just isn't there anymore. Stick a fork in it, it's done. Even KEGA is ahead of KUUU in the ratings, and the constant format tweaks aren't helping matters any. The overall effect is that of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I don't expect KOOL FM to show up in the ratings again, unless Broadway moves the format to an analog frequency that's more accessible. Even if that were to happen, I don't foresee KOOL attracting more than handful of listeners without the DJ's. I can't speak for anyone else, but the former on air personalities were the main reason I listened to KOOL. The present "automated jukebox" format is about the same thing as listening to an MP3 player on shuffle, which IMO is pretty boring.
