Looks like Big Budah (New Program Director) has changed things up during daytime hours moving KUUU to more of Rhythmic AC and all hip-hop at night Heard Madonna and New Kids on Block but to me it sounds more 80/90's music 92.5 The Rhythm Of Salt Lake City

It’s a little all over the place I heard them go from Whitney Houston into Macklemore earlier. Also hearing more recurrents from Doja cat, Harry Styles and Lil NasX during the day. I’d be curious to know the thought process behind this tweak. I mean, respect for thinking outside the box. But when you come to the station expecting to hear Dre & Snoop but get Bsb and Kelly Clarkson…I have to imagine the audience (what’s left of it) is very confused.

Seriously? How much longer is Broadway Media going to continue the format tweak charade in an attempt to revive U92's glory days? Good grief, KALL-AM had better ratings than KUUU for the November and December rating periods! I realize that KALL's boost in ratings probably has a lot to do with the Utes and NFL games, but U92 is still in serious trouble, and Broadway seems oblivious to that fact. Whatever audience there was for hip hop 10-15 years ago just isn't there anymore. Stick a fork in it, it's done. Even KEGA is ahead of KUUU in the ratings, and the constant format tweaks aren't helping matters any. The overall effect is that of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

With so many signals that reach the Wasatch Front (signal strength is certainly debatable), it seems like most clusters are still building a 'primary' station and a 'flanker.' In my experience of seeing Nielsen data for demos, the points between all of these signals are almost negligible (cume is definitely a different story though). Also they vary wildly from good old 6+ Mo-Su 6a-12m rankers these days. Hopefully the "in tab" sample has improved, in my market Nielsen has encountered issues and their weighted averages to make up for it have sometimes hurt the cluster I work for. Of note, the SLC - Ogden - Provo ratings are probably determined by a panel of just under 1,000 people (not households, individual people) for over 2 million potential listeners.
So, it may be that for the agency and national business that Broadway is being hit with, the strategy may be hope that K U U U will become a solid flanker to K U D D. iHeart already seems to follow the idea with K Z H T and K J M Y; Bonneville likely does this with strong 'adult' numbers for K S F I and K R S P (albeit one more for women, one more for men), Cumulus might try this with their C H R and A C combo, etc.
Regardless, it's a crowded field for a common set of artists and I am not sure how this might work out. I do feel for any direct clients that were "U92" fans, I think at this point their dollars may be better spent on another signal or even another medium.

Other than keeping the heritage U92 brand alive and having a somewhat unique format in the Salt Lake City market, I can't think of any other reason why Mr. Hansen wouldn't care about KUUU's ratings. In fact, the ongoing format tweaks suggest to me that SOMEONE at Broadway Media is aware that U92 needs help; otherwise why even bother with format tweaks if ratings are of no concern? It's almost like being on a radio roller coaster ride: Broadway makes some changes that improves U92's numbers for a couple of rating periods; then the ratings tank again and some other tweak is tried. It's like they just keep throwing things at a wall, hoping that something will eventually stick. But as near as I can tell, it's been at least a decade since U92 was a major force with the coveted 18-34 demo.

I'm reminded of a station that had a heavy metal format a few decades ago. They decided to switch to ethnic programming but were afraid that a direct replacement of the heavy metal with the ethnic format would lead to backlash against those of that ethnicity, so they switched instead to a country format for a few months to drive away all the headbangers and THEN switched to the intended format.
I've also heard of stations switching to the format of the number one station in the market knowing that they wouldn't be able to compete but hoping to shave a few tenths of a point off the #1's ratings so that the #2 station (which they owned) would become #1.
Radio station moves/formats aren't always what they seem.

I'm wondering if we're looking at this all wrong. Is it possible that Dell Loy Hansen doesn't particularly care about the ratings at that one station and is keeping it around for another reason? "That's so twisted, even I get it!" - Dr. Johnny Fever

I was a staunch defender of hip-hop and U92 over the summer. Now, I have no idea what to think. And the current format is a MESS!
It's not urban AC. It's not rhythmic AC. It's not classic hip-hop. It's not urban.
I emotionally wash my hands of it.

I think the current U92 format could best be described as "variety".😉 It's what happens when you try to be too many things to all people. It might work OK for public, community, and college radio stations, but not so much for a commercial radio station that depends on advertising revenue to pay the bills.
It could be that Broadway is preparing 92.5 for a format flip in an offbeat way, similar to what CA mentioned. I'm certainly not going to hold my breath waiting to find out, because Broadway Media is just as likely to try another U92 format tweak if the station's ratings continue to tank. 🙄

Listening for the last hour I would call it mostly Rhythmic with a couple of songs that were Rhythmic Adjacent, but that's from someone who listens to stations like that once every 5 months or so. I haven't been able to figure out Broadway's programming strategies. Maybe they could be described as "quirky" . Somehow I don't think there's going to be a flip at 92.5 anytime soon. I also can't figure out some of that music. IMHO it's just BAD. Like, give-me-2-hours-and-I'll-churn-one-out bad. One of these days I'm going to follow through on that threat and actually do it. Maybe I'll end up on The Beat....

Kind of “seems” like a mimic of KTU in New York. I’ve also noticed their website says “The Beat of Salt Lake” although the on air messaging isn’t consistent with that. I’m curious if any conversations are at least starting at other clusters about the possibility of putting a new Rhythmic CHR on. I know there’s a number of factors to consider, but I feel like the market could support it. Hell, even Boise has 2 Rhythms! Why wouldn’t it work in market 28?

Big Budah has joined the "KSL Today" team on KSL TV. As you'll no doubt notice in the Facebook video, he's wearing a 92.5 The Beat T-shirt while working out. fb.watch/iBzpfNamND/?mibextid=6aamW6
