I wonder whether the cost of electricity to power the transmitters is a factor. Channel 4 has an ERP of 32 KW whereas Channel 30's ERP is 1486 KW. Analog UHF TV stations have to use much more power to cover the same territory as VHF. Assuming that they were actually burning that much juice (I know, ERP is not actual power consumed) and assuming, say, 8 cents per kilowatt-hour, it would cost $60 a day to run channel 4 and $2850 a day to power channel 30. Actual power is less, so actual cost is less, but the ratio might be about the same.

If I'm correct, the low-power TV stations are allowed, but not required, to "flash-cut" from analog to digital on their current channel on February 17. I assume that this also applies to 20 and 24. I don't know what any of them plan to do. Channel 16 is already analog and digital. I don't know what they plan to do.

105.7 shows no HD. 99.5 HD is back as is their HD2's "smooth jazz". 94.1HD2 is still KNRS.

KNRS is now being simulcast on KODJ-HD2 (94.1) instead of on KTMY-HD2 (105.7). The commercial-free oldies on KODJ-HD2 are gone. At the moment there is no KTMY HD at all. KJMY HD (99.5)is also gone. The commercial-free "smooth jazz" on KJMY-HD2 is gone. Is CC giving up on HD radio?
By the way, KODJ-HD2 now identifies as KTMY-HD2, Centerville. Someone forgot to change something.

Costco has good prices usually, but a meager selection. Online shopping can be good. I use Amazon.com and Buy.com. Amazon has a huge selection and good prices. Buy.com sometimes has better prices, but not a big selection.

As dxstuboy mentioned on the TV thread, KSL-HD2 is running a 2 minute loop of local news and weather over and over. I'm guessing that they don't update it more than once a day.

One of my DTV converters apparently re-scans every time I turn it on. This morning it tells me that I have a new channel, KULX, on channel 10. At the moment they're carrying Qubo cartoons in Spanish. The FCC Website shows that they are transmitting from the Oquirrhs but are licensed to Ogden. And they're using only 240 watts ERP but still cover their city of license.

The ultra liberal SL Tribune is owned by the ultra liberal Denver Post. They are practically the same newspaper. If any Utah paper is to die, it will be the Trib. Utah is the most conservative state in the nation and will likely continue to support the D-News. And "the church" will never run out of money anyway.
Personally, I only read news online. And I stopped even looking at the Trib a few years ago, about the time the Post bought them. Their foolish front page opinions just make me angry.
-- Just one man's opinion, of course.
P.S. The Seattle Times and the P.I. are also ultra liberal. I think that that is their real problem. The New York Times is dying too since the junior Shultzberger took the crew on a sharp left turn. It looks like a trend.

I think Lynn is confused. Analog channel 11 used to carry KBYU-FM on their SAP. Maybe that's what he's thinking of.

I've not heard any commercial on HD radio channels. I think that I read or heard somewhere that they all have pledged to be commercial free for a certain period in order to attract listeners.

When I turned on my DTV converter just now, it did an automatic scan and told me that there was a new channel, 5.2. I took a look and it's just a static screen saying "Universal Sports, coming soon! 5.2 KSL". And 5.3 is still there with the weather stuff.

I also get exactly 23 channels on my digital TV receivers.
I would love to have news programs repeated on 5.3. Some stations around the country are already doing it. I understand that Boise, Phoenix, Portland and Seattle among others have 24 hour digital news channels.
Since any additional subchannel somewhat decreases the quality of the main HD channel, I'd guess that it's most likely that KSL will just shut off 5.3 at year's end.

It's Monday November 3rd and both KSFI 100.3 and KOSY 106.5 are playing Christmas music.
