*heh* Now "Free taco bell taco" will be off as the last subject... I realize the LDS Church has essentially had its unofficial mouthpiece since the state was a territory, but with the way things are going - especially in larger, more ad $$ Denver, how long can Utah support two major dailies from Salt Lake City? Here in Seattle, we've had these changes in the past few years: * Bureaus across the area closed for the Seattle Times. Hiring freeze and some layoffs at both Seattle papers. * Seattle Post-Intelligencer maintaining focus as a 'city' paper * Circulation price for both if purchased from anyone but a box go to $0.75 * J.O.A. continues, but Hearst tried to break out of it due to "Seattle Times Corporation" claims of losses * Seattle Times Corporation attempting to sell regional newspaper group owned in Maine * King County Journal, a daily targeted toward suburbs on the east side of Lake Washington, southeast of Seattle and west of Tacoma folded in January 2007 due to mounting losses. Company continues nine weekly free community papers to suburbs around the region. * Tacoma News Tribune combines its press, circulation and advertising services with the Olympian, based in Olympia. Both papers are owned by McClatchy Company. I am really nervous for the almost 500 people that work directly for the Rocky Mountain News to provide an amazing product. (same goes for the Deseret News, which used to be a strong paper)

The ultra liberal SL Tribune is owned by the ultra liberal Denver Post. They are practically the same newspaper. If any Utah paper is to die, it will be the Trib. Utah is the most conservative state in the nation and will likely continue to support the D-News. And "the church" will never run out of money anyway.
Personally, I only read news online. And I stopped even looking at the Trib a few years ago, about the time the Post bought them. Their foolish front page opinions just make me angry.
-- Just one man's opinion, of course.
P.S. The Seattle Times and the P.I. are also ultra liberal. I think that that is their real problem. The New York Times is dying too since the junior Shultzberger took the crew on a sharp left turn. It looks like a trend.

I've heard that the Christian Science Monitor is ending their daily paper and will be web only. That seems to be a trend, and I think it makes a lot of sense. Print newspapers are all computer typeset today anyway, so we know they have the infrastructure in place. The web is so cheap versus having to print and distribute pulp that you can get away with a lot less advertising and lower your costs a lot. The thing I don't get is why papers like the D News would charge for having an electronic version of the "real" paper and only give the lite version away for free. That's got to cut down on circulation.

Psst! Don't tell anyone at DN, but I'm still getting their paper, every day, completely FREE! I've called them a number of times to let them know. They say they'll tell their delivery person. I can't say I'm willing to keep calling them. Although, they call me to encourage me to re-up with them and I can't justify spending money on something I already get for free. Anyway... back to this compelling newspaper discussion, already in progress....

Well Timmy, you are getting the paper that I am going to pay for. I signed up my school for both the trib and des news and neither has been here once. They are for sure going to send a bill too! How many times does it take to complain my way into actually getting a paper?

Timmy has done his part. If someone wants to give him a free paper, that's their business. As I understand it, at least with some papers the papers are purchased by the local delivery person who then turns around and bills the subscriber. If that were the case here, then it would be the fault of the local delivery person for lousy bookkeeping.
That reminds me of an incident with the Standard Examiner in Ogden about 5 years back. I got a renewal notice in the mail for my subscription. Funny thing was, I never subscribed, never received any papers and hadn't for the 5 years I had been living here. It wasn't a mistake either. *Everyone* in the area got the same notice and none of them ever subscribed. One house had even been vacant for months. Prior to this my opinion of the paper wasn't too good (it's a fairly dumbed down paper), but afterwards I decided that if this was the way they conducted business that I couldn't trust their reporting either. When I do buy a paper, it's never going to be theirs.

Well, I am not blaming Timmy Update: I staked out my building from 4:30 this morning and found that the neighborhood dog is stealing my papers.

That reminds me of that scene in Phenomenon where John Travolta is trying to figure out what is eating his veggies and does the whole free-the-rabbit move.

Never saw it, maybe I will.
Two days in a row that I have had the Desnews, and today was the first time for the salt lake trib... I just need someone here before the dog gets the papers.

I have to wonder what the dog is doing with the papers. Building a nest? Wallpapering the doghouse? Maybe we need an in depth investigation.
Or maybe not.

Hmm. I just had a wacky idea. Can you get an old newspaper from someone and put it out where the new papers usually go? You could stick a homing beacon inside and then follow it back to its source. The price could be a bit steep.....
