From here at east Murray, (formerly known as Cottonwood) I’m hearing something on 1600 that is in English. It’s a very weak signal, but it sounds like an infomercial for some brain drug. There was a very brief interruption at 8 minutes past for what might have been a station ID, in Spanish. It wasn’t clear enough for me to understand it. Earlier today, and also yesterday, I heard lengthy religious programming, in English. It’s coming from the direction of Riverton.

Radio-locator.com shows KAGJ located off-campus to the west of Manti and Ephraim at a high altitude of 2300 feet above average terrain and their coverage area map blankets miles of I-15.

I’d bet they’ll put their classical (HD3) programming onto 88.3.

So, according to these rules, no translator can be built within the 60 dBu range of the big Oquirrh Mountain FMs, namely from Brigham City to Payson.
Perhaps this is a recent change? I must have been looking at older rules; the FCC stuff is really messy.
Also, these rules imply that almost any current translator along the Wasatch Front does not comply with these rules. Perhaps they've been grandfathered in?
92.1 had its license granted in June 2022. That suggests to me that the rules changed after that.

Thanks, CA. That link will give me hours of fun trying to comprehend the always mysterious FCC rules.

Consider 96.7 and 92.9 with facilities identical to 99.1.
What would preclude them?
The 45 dBu contours of the Tremonton boosters don’t overlap the 45 dBu contour of 99.1. The 45 dBu contours of the Lake Mountain translators don’t appear to overlap the contour of 99.1 either.
The only possible problem I see is the KRCL 96.7 translator in Park City.

I’ve been investigating the possibility of creating new translators in the Salt Lake valley. It appears to me that there are only 2 frequencies possibly available. Each would have coverage almost identical to the current translator on 99.1.
It seems to me that the most likely users of these potential translators are KSOP’s HD2 (KSOP-AM classic country but in FM stereo) and KUDD’s HD2 (“KOOL-FM” oldies, still missing from the standard FM dial).
So, what is keeping them from using these possibilities? 1. They don’t know it’s possible. 2. It is, in fact, impossible and I’m a crackpot amateur. 3. The cost is not worth the possible reward. 4. Something else?

Indian-American creator of 5 Hour Energy, Manoj Bhargava, spends part of his billions to create a clone of the original format of Headline News.
Why? We shall see.

I noticed that KNIT 1320 built an FM translator on 94.5. licensed in December of 2021 according to radio-locator.com. KUTR 820 built a translator on 103.9 near Ogden, also in December of 2021.
Does anyone know whether AM stations are still allowed to apply for FM translators? The FCC mentions "windows" for applications several years ago, but I'm not sure what is currently allowed.
I was thinking that KIHU 1010 and KKAT 860 (and maybe others) could make use of an FM translator to improve their reception at night.

I was just dialing across the FM band and heard country music on 91.5. I listened for a while and it started to fade in and out, mostly in. Top of the hour ID said CKLQ, Brandon, Manitoba. Radio-Locator shows it as 100KW at 2000 feet.

Amusing.
How could we live without the BBC? US networks have practically given up on international news.
Al Jazeera is pretty good if you keep in mind that they are a bit biased. Deutsche Welle and France 24 are at least better than US broadcasters as far as international news goes.
Speaking of bias, I notice that RT is available through Rumble.

KUER 90.1 has added an HD4 channel. It’s playing music in Spanish with comment also in Spanish.
KBYU 89.1 causes my radios to show a flashing HD on their displays, but it never locks in. KBYU has been without HD for a couple of weeks now.
KRCL 90.9 is no longer in HD.
KBEE 98.7 is no longer in HD.
KKUT 93.7 from somewhere south of Provo is much weaker than before, and I haven’t picked up any HD for a month.

FWIW, channel 13’s 4pm news did have a story about Dick Nourse’s death. It ran about one minute in length.
I think I also heard just a brief mention on channel 2, but I don’t remember specifics.

I was just getting ready to post that KUER’s subchannels have been absent for a month, when suddenly they’ve reappeared this morning.
I really like being able to hear the news 24 hours a day on BBC World Service, and it’s nice to have a classical music alternative for when KBYU is airing something I’m not interested in.
Now, when is the FCC going to allow higher power digital signals? Or go all-digital as some European countries have already done.
