News/talk has continued to do very well comprising 3 of the top 5 stations this time around. Trump Impeachment 2: Electric Boogaloo ended Feb 13 and rounding that out to the next weekday when the talkers would have been talking about it would bring us to Monday the 15th. That would be not quite half of the ratings period. It seems like things have been fairly quiet since and hopefully we can keep it that way for at least the next week until the current period ends and then we can get an idea of where news/talk stands when not being inflated by events.
Moving along... Now 97.9 rebounded this month after an extended downward trend while My 99.5 was sharply down. It looks like those two have been playing a tag team match for a few months now. Kool-FM is still strangely AWOL. Power 94.9/101.9 ticked up. Aren't they about due for another shake up?
And that's it from this end. Over to you.

I agree with David though a tongue-in-cheek musical selection would have been amusing to the dozen or so listeners who would have actually heard it. I was also wondering what the programming might have been and I agree NOAA would be the most logical choice. Any music was likely not even a consideration given that broadcasting it legally would require ASCAP/BMI/SESAC licensing. Another possibility might have been the VOA's news headlines.

I think I see what you're saying henry. As I see it if it's handled correctly (big if) it doesn't seem that creepy to me, but YMMV. Here's a non-political example of how it could be done: There is currently work happening at NASA trying to get back to the Moon and then on to Mars. In that context it doesn't seem that out of place to run clips of JFK's moonshot speech in 1961 and compare it to today's efforts. It's not the same thing, but it's a similar general topic. Similar parallels can almost certainly be found in things Rush talked about years ago to events happening today. In fact, there has been complaining for years that Rush and similar hosts like Hannity have been recycling their old material themselves and I tend to agree. It seemed like on the rare occasions I happened to tune into one of those shows it always sounded like the the same stuff they've talked about for decades and I think that's a large part of why ratings for these shows have been eroding. Why listen to a new show that's pretty similar to a rerun? This just takes it one step further and puts quotes around "new" show and makes it very obvious that it's going to be reruns from here on out. At least before there was an expectation when the listener tuned in and found a rerun...er, I mean a "Best of", that they wouldn't tune out because listening to Rush at that time of day was a habit and they would be rewarded with a new show in a day or a week or whatever. Now we KNOW there isn't going to be any new material from Rush, ever. I think only the most die hard Rush fans are going to go for this, which segues into what David said.
Comparing the repackaged Rush shows and old Art Bell or Gene Scott shows I only see as similar in that their listeners could be considered devoted. Bell (or Noory) and Dr Gene are at least as much about entertainment value as than any message they might be trying to get across. While Rush certainly had entertainment value, the primary purpose of his show was espousing a conservative message.
Looking at all of this I'm sure there's an audience for what Premiere is doing. I just have doubts that's it's anywhere near what they would need to make it sustainable, even considering how far the national ratings for conservative talk have fallen for the past few years.

KPNZ is being sold to Faith Broadcasting Network which is associated with the TCT network, a religious outfit.
I've been wondering for a long time what soon to be former owner HC2 was planning by owning both KBTU/23 and KPNZ/24 and running Azteca America on both of them. I would have figured that if one was going to be sold it would have been the low power Ch 23 once they acquired full power 24 but I was wrong. So, assuming this gets approved we should look forward to a change at least on the 24.1 channel. Other TCT owned stations do run secular networks so the other subchannels (Quest, beIn Sports Extra and Cheddar) might stay but who knows. What we DON'T need is a fourth copy of TheGrio which some of the TCT stations run. Three is more than enough, thankyouverymuch.

Interesting filing. I think that running the station at much lower than licensed power (25%) would require an STA to be legal, no? If I remember correctly a station can run run 90-105% of the licensed power without getting authority. Using a different antenna might also require an STA to be legal depending on how different the characteristics are from the licensed tower, but I'm not an engineer. I'm not sure how those might affect keeping the one year silence cancellation from being triggered. To me it reads as making a good faith effort to at least do something even if it isn't what would be technically required.
There's also the question of only being on for about 5 hours. Usually when I hear about Brigadoon stations they're on the air for a day. How long does a station have to be on for it to count? Could someone sign on, give a legal ID, read a 30 second weather report, give another legal ID and sign off and have that count?

The statement "Dan Bongino is replacing Rush Limbaugh" is incorrect and the editors of the news outlets that have run that headline didn't bother to check what's happening. No replacement for Rush has been named as of 3/18. The Cumulus stations that were running Rush will be dropping Premiere in that time slot and going with a show that they own via Westwood One.
None of that is relevant to KNRS. KNRS is owned by iHeart and will be running whatever iHeart owned Premiere ends up distributing in that time slot. At this point I don't think anyone has any idea who that might be.
As for Cumulus, there's a good chance the new show will be cleared on KKAT. I would think they would probably run it live if they can, though there may very well be contracts involved.

No. The judgement was the court case that took AASAA/KMRI away from Vicente. The bankruptcy was dismissed last October. The application I linked to above has all the details.

With the anniversary of the big earthquake and the collapse of KMRI's tower coming up on March 18, there is a new FCC filing. licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101825237&formid=911&fac_num=25405The main gist of it is that notwithstanding KMRI being silent for 365 days it should not have its license deleted because the receiver was unable to do anything with the station due to circumstances beyond his control. It's a reasonable argument, though some of the supporting evidence I find a bit of a stretch myself. With the FCC's propensity to waive pretty much any rule if you just ask I suspect the extension will be granted. There was some new information provided. The motion to set aside the judgement was denied. Not a big surprise there. The interesting one is that (if I'm reading this correctly) the receiver is expecting the application for the assignment of the license to be granted about April 1. That should be the final nail in this particular part of the saga and then we can start looking forward to whatever will appear on 1550. That could still take some time though. Apparently the transmitter was also damaged during the earthquake, though that was a lease.

If KSL wanted Dave Ramsey I'm sure they would have made an offer last year when he was off the air here for almost 2 months.
I wouldn't read to much into KSL putting the Meghan and Harry story high up on the newscast. It's been a MAJOR story for a week now. I don't get the fascination with the royals but it's true.

David, Doug Wright was on 9-noon. Boyd Matheson was previously in the 12:30-3 slot.
amanuensis, why do you think that?
I haven't listened to Lonsberry's show so I'm going to need a little guidance here. How partisan did it get? That would be the concern for me if Lonsberry ever wants to return to KSL in the future. The fact that he's repeatedly joined political staffs tells me that his political views are likely partisan. While a host having partisan views is pretty much required for an opinion-oriented talk station like KNRS, it could be a problem for a news oriented talk station like I think KSL is trying to be.

The current high water mark for # of subchannels is KPDR with 8. KUPX has 6 and the primary ION channel is in HD taking up 8 of the 19 mbps. KSTU has 5 with the Fox 13 primary getting about 9.5 mbps. Unsurprisingly when you start getting down to the 1-2 mbps range that many of the subchannels on many of the local stations are running, there's going to be a big problem with pixelation and low quality in general. I blame the suits for that. They don't seem to care how crappy something looks as long as it's there and they get paid for it.

I'm missing something. What would be the difference between what you're talking about and something like My 99.5 or B98.7?
