I think this change should be good for all parties.

David, Doug Wright was on 9-noon. Boyd Matheson was previously in the 12:30-3 slot.
amanuensis, why do you think that?
I haven't listened to Lonsberry's show so I'm going to need a little guidance here. How partisan did it get? That would be the concern for me if Lonsberry ever wants to return to KSL in the future. The fact that he's repeatedly joined political staffs tells me that his political views are likely partisan. While a host having partisan views is pretty much required for an opinion-oriented talk station like KNRS, it could be a problem for a news oriented talk station like I think KSL is trying to be.

After Jay McFarland left, and Boyd Matheson stopped doing that slot, they were having several guest hosts from 12:30 to 3 and then Doug Wright did take over as a "permanent" guest host until Lee took over. It will be interesting to see who takes over that slot. Will Doug come out of "retirement" again? I wonder if they'd consider having Dad (Bob Lonsberry) do a show for them. I think his show on WHAM gets over at 10 AM our time so he'd have a two and a half hour break. He's probably way more opinionated than Lee is, though, so, base on the comments earlier, it's probably not likely that they'll keep that time slot in the family. Whatever happened to Bob Lee? He did shows for KNRS and KALL and then disappeared off the planet as far as I could tell. I for one would enjoy more of a lighthearted nonpolitical show like the browsers kind of was.

Maybe the return of Jay Macfarland? After his run for office, he's been doing a podcast.

Maybe the return of Jay Macfarland? After his run for office, he's been doing a podcast. I certainly hope not. I didn't mind listening to "Jay Mac" when he was doing "The Browsers" with Amy Iverson, but after she left the show went downhill fast. IMO, McFarland solo was way too negative. Amy was a good foil for Jay, and she did a good job of balancing out The Browsers. Certainly with all the existing air talent at KSL and in Salt Lake City, they can find someone better than Jay Mac to take over for Lonsberry.

I'd like to see KSL do something like what KNX does in afternoons with Mike Simpson and Charles Feldman. They call it "KNX in depth" more interviews and a slightly more relaxed show, almost a talkshow with traffic breaks. I feel like Jeff Caplan already kind of does this but if he had the chance to be more freeform and do more interviews etc plus add a 2nd host maybe Maria shilaos as a coHost. And add Ethan Millard from 12:30-3:00

Ethan Millard already has a day job with a financial planning company in Salt Lake. Unless KSL were to match or exceed his current salary, I doubt he'd willing to give up his current job.

One other thought I had is adopting a schedule similar to Bonneville's KTAR in Phoenix.
They run Dave Ramsey, and the way their schedule is they wouldn't need to replace Lonsberry.

One thing I kind of enjoyed when Jay Mac was there was, during the 3 o'clock hour, Jay and Jeff would get into these little discussions/debates about various issues. Usually they disagreed but they did it in a polite and humorous way and I liked it. As far as Dave Ramsey moving to KSL, I think he's currently on 860 KKAT. I'm sure KSL would be a much better spot for him as far as he and his people would be concerned--much wider coverage on a station with a much much better established brand etc.--but, I would imagine anyway, that KKAT has some kind of contract with the Ramsey people that would have to be honored/fulfilled before his show could be moved to KSL. The last time I remember KSL having a nationally syndicated show during the day was years ago when Dr. Laura was still on KNRS and KSL carried Sean Hannity. Laura went to satellite, Hannity was picked up by KNRS, and KSL has been live and local during that "day part" (I guess they call it) ever since. Based on that, I don't think they'd put a national show in there but, on the other hand, it would be cheaper and I don't know how the pandemic has effected KSL's revenue but on that same Radio Insight page where the Lonsberry story was, I read that KJUL in Las Vegas shut down and SAYS they'll return when the economy picks back up in Las Vegas. That made me sad. I've always enjoyed that station. I just had a weird thought. KSL has lots of podcasts. Maybe they could feature portions of those during that time everyday to entice people to tune in to those. I don't know if there would be enough content there, though, to fill up 2 and a half hours five days a week. I wouldn't mind them making Utah's Noon News a full hour again and just finding some kind of 2 hour show from 1 to 3.

KSL has really scaled back on local news. I tuned in at 5:30 yesterday, and right off the top there was breaking news, and then straight into national stories (Meghan & Prince Harry). A few years ago under the "Utah's Afternoon News" banner there would be 3-4 live reporters working local stories, and they would stack them at the top and bottom of the hour.

If KSL wanted Dave Ramsey I'm sure they would have made an offer last year when he was off the air here for almost 2 months.
I wouldn't read to much into KSL putting the Meghan and Harry story high up on the newscast. It's been a MAJOR story for a week now. I don't get the fascination with the royals but it's true.
