Michael... its a loophole in FCC rules. There is a translator in northern Utah running the HD-3 stream of KLZX. Those are the only two doing this that I know of, and in my opinion, it shouldn't be legal. The station even has its own branding. "Classic Country 99.1."
CA, I feel the same way about credibility. What about all of those who listened in Utah County, they are all the sudden saying "where did the station go?" I wonder how Clear Channel knew Country Legends was flipping down to the exact day...

Yup I sit corrected. An engineer pointed out that no it's not illegal and it is indeed perfectly legal and it's being done everywhere. Kinda gives me even more mixed feelings about HD radio, however. I mean....wasn't part of the motivation to go out and buy an HD Radio so you could "get the stations in between the stations" (the HD2s and 3s) ? So if they're gonna take and put HD2 channels on analog translators so everyone can get them anyway then.....isn't that hurting their cause? well...I guess I don't think it should be legal either. I think the HD2's are something that makes HD Radio unique. But taking and putting the HD2's on a translator? Well it's not so unique anymore. It makes it to where you don't HAVE to have the HD radio anymore. It makes it look like a sneaky way to get another "radio station" on the air. (Just my opinion, folks) Heck I guess it doesn't matter what they call it as long as they Id the HD2 channel once an hour. Man this is nuts. As if they need more stations on the dial. You know I have been to and through many large markets and still I don't believe I've seen a dial as crowded as Salt Lake's dial. I feel sorry for you FM DXers in the valley. Where could one try to DX anything on such a crowded local dial?

Yeah, IBOC on translators isn't that new. That's not trying to sell the digital receivers. That's just a way to originate programming on a translator without actually originating programming. While we're on the subject of translator abuse I'll also mention the relatively new AM on translator not to mention the satellators. Those could be topics all on their own.
DX in Salt Lake? Shirley you jest. Maybe when there's maintenance on Farnsworth.......
There's at least one other shoe that hasn't dropped yet. As far as K-Love goes, KNKL has far northern Utah down to about Layton covered; KKAT-FM (new calls pending I'm sure, assuming this isn't stunting) has from there down to central Utah covered. What about K209CJ (89.7) from Farnsworth? It's pretty much a duplicate now. I'm thinking a flip to Air1.

Man! I'm about ready to buy a new clock radio that can get WWV. At least, THEY don't keep changing formats.

That comment just made my day Kenglish. As my name goes, I do DX from Salt Lake and it isn't easy, but it is possible. I've talked with many people who can confirm that Salt Lake City is indeed the most crowded radio market in the country. I looked at L.A. and there are actually open spaces on the dial... go figure. That being said, as I said before, DX is still possible. Here is my proof: www.ubstudios.com/dx/slcfmdx.html

I mean, heaven forbid citizens somewhere like... West Valley... try to put on a low power station at some frequency (say, 96.7 FM) and broadcast to an area of a few miles! I mean... that might be like KEVA or something! Up here we have AM stations on FM translators, but UGH, guys! They can't engineer it right so it sounds like sh-ite. The worst example is a station in Mt. Vernon, Wa. that doesn't even sound like it's doing anything other than re-piping out the AM signal received poorly off air and remodulated. It sounds like a telephone line in a cavern. www.kbrcradio.com/

Is that AM on a translator you mentioned a fill-in translator or outside the AM's protected contour? I would think that the delivery method rules are probably the same as translating an FM. They might not have a choice but have to retransmit the AM itself.
Having UPR taking over would make sense if EMF was selling it. I doubt it's for sale though. I still think that K217FQ (KYFO's translator on 91.3) is almost pointless with the booster for the 95.5 main on air. Maybe BBN could be convinced to sell.

Michael knows this but KUGR in Green River Wyoming (1490) has an FM translator on 104.9 in town and boy does it sound good. I noticed KVNU has an FM translator on 102.1 too, it sounds decent. Wonder whats keeping that station from feeding better audio.
I would love to hear UPR down here too, as opposed to having to hear it through a ton of static. They have a cool HD-2 signal that I could only hear when in Tooele. Other pointless translators: KUFR's 91.9 Centerville translator could be added to the mix.
Also, 104.9 (translator of KGNT) has been dead air for the past week or so, just FYI.

Just FYI, the 91.9 translator is actually in Riverdale and doesn't reach Centerville well.

I was thinking of 91.3. Sorry, wrong translator/frequency, not even KUFR. In that case, I withdraw my comment about it being worthless.
104.9 is still dead air at last check. It is one of the only clear ways I can hear KGNT. I miss it.

Citadel has just changed a couple stations along with Clear Channel to the GEN X format. Hip-Hop - Hit's - Alternative from the 90's On February 15, 2010, Sunny 103.3 became "Music for Generation X" playing music from the 90s, ranging from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Vanilla Ice to Sir Mix-a-lot. Pretty much like Sirius XM's 90's on 9 Wow does this page look like 101.9's webpage or what www.sunny1033.com/Or Clear Channels Gen X www.genxtulsa.com/main.htmlBut I'm thinking 101.9 will be more like this staying with the alternative theme look at playlist..... www.genxlouisville.com/iplaylist/playlist.htmlI'm sure I'll find out from the forum later...which direction they took DSPete
