Hey, it's Microsoft Sam! I used him on MY radio station! How dare they! </sarcasm>
Apparently this is no-budget stunting. On the good side, it's so bad it's funny. And yes various stations have used it before. I think KISN->Kiss did and there was at least one more though I can't remember who. I don't think they really need to stunt since the audience is already there, but sure why not.
One of the more useful and memorable stunts was also on 105.7, back just before they launched The River in 2004. For a few days they ran the audio of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Debates right before the election. I doubt it made any difference in the election, but for those who had missed them or just wanted to hear them again it was great radio. Come to think of it, that would make good use of an IBOC stream in the future.
There's been talk of Air America coming to Salt Lake for the past few years, but that was mostly concerning Citadel's underperforming properties (1230 and 860). I think any type of liberal talkradio is going to have a very tough road in this market. Heck, it's having a tough time all over the country. And if I were putting liberal talk on, I'd rather have that on an FM signal than an AM one because there's a better chance of snagging the younger people who are more likely to be liberals. I know young people can find AM if there's something compelling there to draw them in, but why make it harder. And then there's the argument that talk show listeners are talk show listeners and competing against yourself is just a really bad idea. You end up stealing from Peter to pay Paul. (Same reason why even though I've been an advocate for a real 60's bad oldies station on FM, one of Clear Channel's other properties isn't the place for it since that would cannibalize KODJ.)

As for who's got the best AM signal daytime, I would say KSL's daytime beats the new 570 simply because it's non-d. Even KPCW(AM) is 50kw ND, but of course that turns into a pumpkin at sunset. I dunno....looking at the predicted coverage on radio-locator it looks like KNRS would beat KSL most every where that counts....with the possible exception of going up I-84 towards Twin Falls. The other place where KSL might be better because of a KNRS null would be south west, but the area is largely un populated and for that mater lightly traveled. For the metro area KNRS should be the dominate daytime AM signal. Even now I've have heard KNRS in the daytime in Cedar City, no easy thing to do with 590 pounding away. Nights will belong to KSL. Of course #1 we won't really know until they fire that sucker up, and in today's economic climate that when could easily turn to an if (CP's have expired). Of course #2 is it really going to matter which is the bigger AM signal? If there is going to be a big push to move talk to FM (and I happen to think that will in time take place and we see the push Bonneville and now others are making in that direction) then what will be left for AM...even sports stations are now making the move to FM in some markets.

Kind of an uneventful switchover. Last quote from Sam was Book him, Dan-o! Then the last second of an ad. Then Bob ah, Lonsberry ahhh asked us to ahh change bands to FM at ahh 105.7.

It's fun to listen to Pat Grey again (via Glenn Beck's show).

The good news is that we know it wasn't scripted. Yeah it was rather anticlimactic, but Sam was the radio equivalent of Valium. Maybe they could run that in the late evening on whatever 570 is going to become as a service to insomniacs. I have 4 hours of Sam and the first hour of the "new" KNRS. I was actually expecting that there was going to be a minute of dead air. The countdown actually ended at 7:59, not 8:00. I thought their clock was off. Curious why they did that. Somewhere early on I thought I heard Lonsberry says that he was losing the AM signal by about Center St in Provo. Did I imagine that? That doesn't sound right to me. The signal should still be strong in that area. Anyone down Provo way who can confirm that? Maybe Clear Channel should stop renting him '87 Yugo's when he comes to town. Oh and for those who follow these things, the stereo pilot is off now. No stereo commercials here. How many radios don't have a stereo blend circuit these days?

Good thing too. I like Abby. She was the only good thing about Bonneville's Buzz in NYC back 13 or 14 years ago. And this is a homecoming of sorts for her as well. She was on 105.7 when it was The Mountain.

The bad news... the HD signal degrades the audio. Now it sounds tinny and there is no life in the processing. Ugh.
Will be nice to hear C2C without the power line buzz though.

I don't get to watch much TV, are they advertising locally about this change?

I haven't seen anything myself, but I think it's a lot less important that KNRS advertise the move than it would be for a new station to be letting people know that it exists. That's not to say that they shouldn't advertise, since they obviously should. It's just not as big a priority. I doubt that even the most casual KNRS listener will be able to miss the change by the time the 45 days are up.
And a housekeeping note: 105.7 will be changing to KNRS-FM soon.

Fox 13 carried a segment on it, that's all I know. KSL wouldn't touch it obviously.
I noticed they still IDed as KTMY Centerville. Radio-Locator doesn't mention the switch (because they are usually very out of date) and I can't find any records of KNRS-FM, but its coming.

I think they could update their RDS to at least display the current show. If they do weather and such, it might be too Johnny-come-lately of them. "Bob ahh Lonsberry on ahh 105.7 KNahhRS"

I love it ahhh every time you guys make fun of ahhhh Lonsberry, because that's ahhhh exactly how he ahhh sounds.
KNRS used to say what was playing on their RDS. I see the HD side, which shows whats playing now.
One other thing I have noticed, KTMY must have a seperate tx (same tower) for the HD side, as the signals aren't exactly aligned. There is about a 2 second delay between the analog and the HD, you notice when HD kicks in, it replays what you just heard.
Another odd thing, I am getting KLZX (95.9)'s RDS all the way here in South Salt Lake, and it looks like a jumbled mess.

The way I understand it, the analog on IBOC is delayed 8 seconds from the first broadcast of that section on the digital sideburns, er, sidebands. That allows the receiver to buffer the digital so if there's loss of signal it won't be a complete mess. Apparently the delay is a bit out of whack somewhere.

The call letters have now officially changed to KNRS. KTMY is a thing of the past now!
