I read this article about Frank-FM out on Cape Cod with great interest. From the article it sounds a lot like the station I described here. Wow. Somebody is actually trying this crazy idea, (though I'm sure they didn't get it from here.)
The excitement was short lived. I've listened to it several times over the past few days and the reality doesn't match up all that well to the press release. The truth is that it's still basically an adult hits station with 80's and 90's music. I didn't log the songs but it seemed like the expanded playlist came up about once an hour. One hour it was Roar by Katy Perry, another it was Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf. Granted that may be the only station in the country where you could hear both of those songs, but paying mostly lip service to anything outside of the 80's & 90's just seems like a false promise.
Is there a possibility that some station somewhere might try a format where it really does play songs from the 60's to today without favoritism toward any one time period? It could be a gold mine for music discovery. From what I've heard, there's a real need for curation in today's online audio streaming services. This is curation on steroids. One big question is whether the listeners would give the unfamiliar music a chance and see whether they like it, or whether they'll bail to a station where they might not know every song but at least it all sounds somewhat similar. Would you give it a try? Would people you know try it?
