Sounds like another AM music station has bit the dust in the Salt Lake market. I'm listening to KDYL-AM 1060 as I type this, and it sounds like the station has dumped Real Oldies for a syndicated news/talk/sports format. Anyone know when the last day for the Real Oldies format was?

I can't make heads or tails of what's on 1060 right now. It's just a mishmash of noise here at night, if they're on the air at all.
It's sad but I'm not hugely surprised. A lot of what was on 1060 was also on KODJ. For 99.9% of the people, KODJ on FM just sounded better than an AM. I liked the classic Top 40 presentation of KDYL better myself, but you can't discount the sound quality. It's a shame.

Damn! That was one of my favorite AM stations in Salt Lake. I'm disappointed and saddened. I was wondering what happened to the oldies, as I was trying to receive it from here with no luck last night.

China Radio International. Say hello to the new boss.

Wikipedia says CRI is a mouthpiece for the mainland China government. They think there's enough of a market here to make the investment worthwhile?

China Radio International on a Salt Lake radio station--what the heck? I wonder if this explains why I've been getting a warning from Google for the past three weeks that says the KDYL-AM site is infected with trojans.

Wikipedia says CRI is a mouthpiece for the mainland China government. They think there's enough of a market here to make the investment worthwhile? I'd guess that they don't care about cost vs. listenership. They have infinite cash and political will. They have stations all over the US now and are buying more. Stand by for news!

CRI really isn't as bad as you're all implying, we have it here on unrated AM on the west coast too. I have a hard time staying with the news broadcasts since: a) obvious "propaganda" reasons b) many presenters are Chinese so their delivery of English is difficult c) time shift / repeats / confusing schedule
But, I've also found the music broadcasts to be fun and well presented, generally with hosts that speak English well or are from other countries (Hong Kong? South Africa? Australia?). It might be the only station in SLC-Ogden-Provo that will have small blocks of 'dance pop' and globally charting music. Too bad they couldn't buy out KUTR, isn't its signal superior for most of the day? *grin*

David, I'm positive that the malware warning is unrelated. The website itself is still the same Real Oldies site that's been there a while. The problem is there's something claiming to be a counter that's really a link to a site in Russia that's distributing malware. If you went there and haven't disabled scripting you may be infected. I'd check on that.
Meanwhile at the new station.... All I can say is "wow". And that's not a good "wow". From both a technical and content perspective, it just sounds abysmal. In the middle of the day, solidly in the city grade signal, I was hearing it fade in and out. That might have been the satellite downlink that was going in and out, I'm not sure. I do know that it sounded absolutely dreadful. The content was just as bad though. I heard people who were probably not native English speakers trying to sound like hip Americans. Then I heard a movie review show. They mentioned that The Hobbit was coming out soon. Uh, that came out almost 3 months ago. They were also talking about the movie "Save the Date" and their description of the movie was lifted straight out of IMDB. The whole thing makes a 10 watt class D college station sound amazing.
Short review: they should request the callsign KDOA.

Maybe they are running tapes there until things are set? The station here is pretty reliable but does go to dead air from time to time. Alfredo on the PDX Radio board is a real aficionado. The station is now being leased by G&E Studios (at least in the case of Portland) but still owned by the original owners. Here's one of many threads about modulation issues, apparently they don't contract engineers in any of these cities. feedback.pdxradio.com/topic/kxpd-broadcasting-off-channel-at-1043khzgestudious.com/index.php/en/about-company Looks like Las Vegas is coming soon, too.

I stopped by KDYL after I heard this on Thursday. Ralph told me that he still owns the station, but is operating it for the G&E Studios, which carries a lot of CRI programming. They are not actually full-time CRI.
Ralph's stations in Moab and Elko are doing well, and he is not looking to sell any. He will keep the offices and facilities in Salt Lake, as he also has some other business ventures running out of there.
I heard a loss-of-signal on Thursday afternoon....might have been due to the sun-outages. Their satellite dish was pointed west, so that would be about the right time.

I thought a Chinese company couldn't own a station in the US, anyhow. Is that right?

Here's the story. Station owner dumped the format and is doing an LMA with a chinese american group. That's his choice and that has finally opened the door for me to do something I have been planning for two years and now can implement. I have a project and hope to get it going and on air by the end of month. I have partnered with on air Tv channel 18 KPDR and their Techs have created an online high quality audio and video streaming, and the organization is going to be producing Video and Audio programming and We have a former exec with Disney who is part of my team. I am looking for on air known personalities who have found former owners and PDs don't give too much of a darn for talent and have moved on. I am looking for a cadre of known personalites to do 3hour shifts 6a-9p. The shows can be done from the new radio facility we are finishing, and the TV production is on site. Also we have the capability to do shows from your home and we had the first demo of how it's working this week and it's mind blowing. If you could spread the word and I'm going to load up a presentation on the website and the TV channel and perhaps will have a get together this week to show everyone how it will work and how some of you can be a part. Oh, and the beauty is you don't have to worry about owners pulling your strings...as the owners of the TV/New radio facility are behind my project 100% and will insure the success...if you want to know more and are in the mood to have fun again in broadcasting, email me quickly...danny@kdylam.com or text 801 2099533...and if you aren't ready for this please tell any of your compatriots who may want to get back to work Danny Kramer
