Are they off the air permanently? Haven't heard them for weeks....do we need to check with their engineer?

Are they off the air permanently? Haven't heard them for weeks....do we need to check with their engineer? They have a construction permit to move slightly, but I don't think that's it. Legacy went into bankruptcy a few years back, and I don't see anything indicating that the stations were sold yet. That might be pending. Just a guess though.

Their engineer tells me that the station is now abandoned, and the land owner will probably bulldoze the entire site soon. I wonder who gets to keep the CD Library, "the Complete String Quartets of Shostakovitch"? I was sorta gettin' addicted to them .

So no more KNFL? Can we call a time of death yet?

It seems weird that the station would just be abandoned given the bankruptcy. Wouldn't it make sense to sell at least the license?

It's been on the market (in receivership) for a couple of years, with no takers. 1490 in Ogden, which was under the same circumstances, is doing some sort of Spanish LMA, IIRC.
If it wasn't such a long commute, I'd be tempted to buy the tower and building and live there. Might be a nice, quiet DX'ing spot. I wonder what will happen to all the equipment?

I wonder what will happen to all the equipment? I'm surprised metal thieves haven't ransacked the site yet. Didn't that happen to KUTR while it was being built? It's just happened to a station licensed to Vancouver, Wash. but fortunately they have an FM translator to keep broadcasting from.

Considering that the Logan market stations keep wandering off, I still think it would make sense for some local community group to take the station. We keep hearing about how big a demand for LPFM there is, but isn't a flea power AM the next best thing? I wonder if anyone in the area even knew it was up for sale. *shrug*

Hell, if I would have known it was up for sale, I would have considered moving back to Utah and buying it. All of you guys on this board could run it with me

Unfortunately I don't think anyone will quote a specific figure. The station & license are probably not worth much, but the land is probably worth a great deal. Does the FCC still allow "hammock" style rooftop AM antennas?

The last Marconi (horizontal) or "long wire" rooftop transmitting antenna was retired a few years ago. It was at KGFJ, Los Angeles. It was also grandfathered so no new Marconi antennas will be licensed. One of the major drawbacks of a long wire is that the signal tends to be directionalized along the orientation of the antenna. Construction and maintenance costs were another big hurdle. IIRC, KSL's standby antenna (the self-supporting tower to the west) was originally one-half of a Marconi antenna (the other half being the original TV tower which failed in high winds after being moved up to Farnsworth Peak). Note that this "long wire" antenna was "aimed" toward Salt Lake City.

For what it's worth: the FCC site now lists an application for remain silent authority for KNFL. The reason given for the station going silent is failure to negotiate an economically reasonable tower site lease. So I suppose that makes the "death" of KNFL official now.
