Too bad we can't convince Bonneville International to add the 1160 frequency to KSL's logo for the station's 101st anniversary, eh? 😉 Yeah, I know: AM is dead/sounds like crap, most people listen to FM, it's not cool to mention the AM frequency, blah, blah, blah. KNX never mentions 1070 AM now except during their TOH ID. I still believe that KSL (and KNRS) should promote their AM frequencies, but I'm sure they don't care what I think. Besides, the AM vs. FM debate has already been discussed elsewhere on this board.🙂 But for those who are interested in the history of KSL radio, here's a short documentary from 2022 about where it all began. youtu.be/y6xa5eoCTvA

Maybe they can do something special on Jan 16 2025. Who sees why?

To this day, I was always curious as to why Jeff Caplan was not mentioned at all in that documentary. He did some cool pieces on his minute of news about KSL's hundredth birthday but not a peep from him in that special. At the time I was worried maybe his days were numbered there but, it's been a year, and he's still there. Does anyone know or can anyone speculate as to why Jeff wasn't a part of that at all? It would have been such a neat story. The guy who covered 9/11 on WCBS radio, meets a woman on the internet from Utah, moves here, takes over afternoon drive, and now makes some of the most entertaining radio I've ever heard with his minute of news. But ... crickets. They even mentioned "new voices" with Dave and Dujanovic and KSL at night. As I remember, Herb Jepko wasn't mentioned either which I thought was an odd omission. One of the first talk shows to be heard nationally, originating with KSL and ... crickets. I know there's only so much that can be done in an hour but, they did mention Orson Welles's War of the Worlds broadcast and, yes KSL carried that as an affiliate of CBS, but so did hundreds of other stations. Herb and Jeff ... I don't know. What are people's thoughts a year later?

The most obvious thing to mention is, as you said, they were trying to cram 100 years of history into 45 minutes. Besides that, the show was really about the station itself and its history, not the people on it. I'm sure they could have made an entire other special all about the personalities. As for why they would have included War of the Worlds, it was one of the most famous radio broadcasts in history. It's still talked about and studied 85 years later. As for the current shows you mentioned, both of them could use the publicity. I wouldn't have included them, but I wouldn't be surprised if the marketing department pushed for including them. The whole thing had a feel of a promo to it.

The whole thing had a feel of a promo to it. That was my take away....there were a few cool parts (like the guy who when he was a kid lived out in the apartment in the basement of the old transmitter building when his dad was on the engineering staff) but I agree, it was rather promotional about the future of 102.7 riding on the historic coattails of 1160.

I would have loved to see more history, like NARBA, when nearly every station had to change frequency overnight. Or, the day KSL went to 50 Kw, and the broadcast was live on all the CBS Affiliates. The portion of the coast-to-coast Lincoln Highway that runs past the transmitter was renamed for KSL that day. Lots of history about former on-air personalities was omitted. There are photos in the state archives, showing listeners gathered around their radios. I would hope that Reception Reports are still around, sent by listeners around the world. Were there EKKO Stamps made for KSL?

I forgot to mention the old KSL transmitter, that given to the War Department and installed on a ship in WWII, to fight enemy propaganda. And, I would have loved to hear Charlie Freed's "Windows" vignettes, with historical programs about Utah history.

I suggested last year that someone from BYU or The U might produce a more documentary type retrospective but I never heard of anyone doing it. Did anyone hear anything like that?

CA, you mentioned January of 2025. Is that the 20 year anniversary of KSL being on 102.7?

I think that the Utah Broadcasters Association should fund a documentary that celebrates the history and achievements of the radio and TV industry in Utah. Most people don't realize what was done over the last century, or how much of the business was actually centered in Utah ...from the inventions, to the companies that supplied the equipment, to the first major Cable TV companies, to the major talent that came from here (or, honed their skills while passing through).

FWIW: In 2018 Maria Shilaos produced a multi part series about the history of radio news in the Salt Lake Valley over the past three decades. The episodes of "For The Love of Salt Lake Radio News" are available as a podcast through KSL and several other podcasting websites. kslpodcasts.com/podcast/for-the-love-of-salt-lake-radio-news/

CA, you mentioned January of 2025. Is that the 20 year anniversary of KSL being on 102.7? No, not quite. The KSL flip happened Sept 3 2005, just in time for the first BYU football game of the season. You're on the right track though.
