Just saw this tweet from Hans Olsen announcing The Zone's weekday schedule. "Unrivaled" taking the afternoon drive on 1280/97.5. I know that show was on KSL Newsradio, but had recently been shortened.

Also, Jake Scott is moving to 10 A.M. to noon and is being paired with Ben Anderson. I think Ben has been with kslsports.com for a few years so Bonneville is definitely inserting their people in. I guess the only weekday show that wasn't effected at all is DJ and PK.

I just heard a promo on the Zone announcing the new lineup. The promo concluded by saying "powered by kslsports.com". So, at least for now it's still The Zone. It's just being "powered by kslsports.com.'

I wonder if "Unrivaled" & "The Players Club" will continue to air on KSL radio weeknights from 7-9 PM. I tuned into The Players Club recently, and it seems to be part of the Unrivaled program, but with a focus on individual sports stars. The hosts are the same: Scott Mitchell and Alex Kirry.

Here's a gread idea for Gordon Monson. Why doesn't he start a podcast? I know there might be conflicts with the Tribune. However, he could quit working for the Tribune if his podcast would conflict with them and just go compleetly on his own and podcast about sports. I wonder if he has thought about that.

Everybody and his dog is starting a podcast these days. Going all in (pun intended) on a brand new podcast seems like a really bad idea. Trying it and then only if it's successful reevaluating the Trib job seems like it could work.

I'm wondering if Gordon Monson and Austin Horton could start a morning show on KALL. I wonder how much of a draw Dan Patrick is over there. Or maybe Gordon could pair with Spence again in the afternoon and Austin Horton and Tony Parks could start a morning show. Or are DJ and PK too big to compete with? I would listen to Tony and Austin in the morning. I'd probably flip back and forth. And I would definitely listen to Spence and Gordon probably more than Kirry and Mitchell. I only heard portions of their first show on Wednesday but, to me, they sounded really nervous. They were on remote though so that could have been part of it. I enjoyed the Jake and Ben show, what I heard of it.

Coincidentally (or not), Mark Miller Subaru was the sponsor of Utah Car Cents. I understand Austin is going to be doing a podcast automotive show with Jeff Miller as well, who was his usual co-host on Utah Car Cents.

I made a couple of attempts to listen to Unrivaled. That was painful.
After several shows I'm wondering if this is the high level for this show? Yea when there is a guest the show is bearable. When it is just the two hosts, I've found myself switching the radio to ESPN 700 as the sports discussions have been more interesting and insightful. Who thought it was a good idea to put Unrivaled on the afternoon drive home?
So far this "powered by KSL Sports" has been a step in the wrong direction. I am really wondering about the future of The Zone Sports Network.

I have to believe that part of Alex Kirry and Scott Mitchell's nervousness (or obvious discomfort) that comes across on air at The Zone must stem from filling Gordon Monson's time slot. Whether you love him or hate him, there's no denying that Monson is a sports talk icon in Utah. Based on the comments I've read on KSL.com and The Zone's Facebook page, the ratio of negative to positive feedback regarding Gordon's departure is roughly 70% and 30%, respectively. Alex and Scott have got some big shoes to fill, and I'd be nervous too if I was replacing Gordon Monson. Couple that with the fact that Unrivaled is basically a five hour show Monday-Friday now, and the host's fraying around the edges is bound to come across on air. I'm kind of surprised that KSL is still airing The Player's Club/Unrivaled from 7-9 PM, but I suppose there's not much they can put in its place except for some prerecorded nationally syndicated program--or more infomercials.

FWIW, 1280thezone.com has been down for almost three days now. Either the website is getting one heck of an update, or Bonneville is in the process of changing The Zone's URL.

The domain name ownership was changed to Bonneville. Bonneville runs their own websites. The Zone DNS is currently pointing to Imperva which looks like some kind of website security company. The error page that is coming up is what they generate if a website points to them but that website isn't their customer. Yes, I confirmed that. That suggests the The Zone used to use them but doesn't anymore. It could be that nobody realized they needed to renew with Imperva, or the new Bonneville hosted version of the site (either the old one or a new one) is taking longer than they thought, or somebody forgot to update the DNS records, or something else. Regardless of the reason, this seems like a continuation of the theme we've been having over and over. Something is broken and nobody noticed. Even if it was only a placeholder page, Bonneville should have SOMETHING there besides a generic error page.

I finally found a list of the Jazz games that will be simulcast on KSL on the NBA site. Inexplicably, while the page lists both the AM & FM frequencies for The Zone, it makes no mention of the 50 kW powerhouse on 1160 AM--Only the KSL-FM frequency is listed.🙄 I really don't understand the reasoning behind this decision, especially when the NBA page also lists several other Utah AM radio stations that broadcast the Jazz games. KZNS has to power down to 670 watts at local sunset, while KSL-AM is 50 kW 24/7. Most of the Jazz games that will be broadcast on KSL radio are going to be played in the late afternoon or early evening when KZNS has already reduced power for the night, so why not publicize the KSL-AM frequency for the listeners who live beyond the range of 102.7? I don't know what Bonneville is trying to accomplish by ignoring 1160, unless they're trying to appeal to the hip millenials who never listen to AM radio. Frankly, I think it's a huge mistake not to mention the KSL-AM frequency which covers most of the Western U.S. at night, but apparently someone at Bonneville International doesn't think it's very important. www.nba.com/jazz/broadcast

Just a thought, since there ARE other AM stations around the state that carry Jazz games, maybe Bonneville is trying to be a good neighbor and not call attention to KSL-AM so that people will still listen to the game on their local AM station instead of KSL-AM. Or maybe not.

Or maybe not. I think it has more to do with Bonneville de-emphasizing 1160 and focusing on 102.7 in their advertising for KSL radio. Neglecting to mention 1160 on the NBA site is nothing they haven't been doing for the past 2-3 years, and it's a growing trend among stations which have both AM & FM frequencies.
