I realize this will never be but I wish companies were required to give a full on explanation as to why on air talent are let go and why they pick some talent over others. At the beginning of the pandemic, Tony Parks was let go from KZNS. In my opinion, Tony is more talented than someone like Jake Scott who survived the pandemic cutbacks and the Bonneville takeover. Austin Horton always did the playoff overtime shows which were great. I listen to several NBA broadcasts and there are still some that take listener calls after every game. The Jazz used to do that but for some reason the current trend has steered away from listener calls. Was Gordon Monson too controversial? Was it because he works for the competing newspaper? But, that doesn't make sense because David James works for the competing television station. These guys obviously know what they're doing, or at least they think they do, but, to me, on the outside looking, or should I say, listening, in, it just seems so random. Why is Alex Lundberg still there and Austin Horton not? Maybe they were making too much money. I'd be interested in people's thoughts and guesses on this. Gordon Monson explained it today from his point of view. www.sltrib.com/sports/2021/10/10/gordon-monson-real-story/

That is a really well written article.
I think a key takeaway from it that most here know but might be a surprise to those outside the business is near the beginning of the article; "It happens in radio." If I were teaching a beginning course in radio or TV, that would be one of the very first lessons. If you're looking for job security, this ain't the industry for you. Sometimes there are good reasons to let someone go. Often it's arbitrary and capricious. It seems to me that Monson gets that.

Based on what's happening in Denver I'm wondering if there's another shoe to drop in Salt Lake. radioinsight.com/headlines/214050/kkfn-to-launch-unofficial-colorado-avalanche-denver-nuggets-postgame-shows/I admit I don't listen to sports radio. There isn't anything like that happening here, is there? Broadway's ESPN 700 has RSL and The U. Bonneville trying to corner the market on local sports talk seems like a reasonable strategy. There's also the wild card of whatever happens with the (as far as I know) still pending sale of RSL, but that's another matter. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see something like that. You?

KOVO does unofficial pre- and post-game shows for BYU football.

When the Jazz were on 1320 KFNZ, 1280 the Zone KZNS used to do unofficial Jazz post game shows. The used to bill them as "the most interactive post game show in the country." I think they still do post game shows for Cougar and Ute football games.

I can't see the 1280thezone.com continuing to operate when Bonneville has staff writing for kslsports.com. I suspect we may see merging of the web and social media properties, and maybe branding.

FWIW, KVNU still does pre and post game shows (Aggie Call) for Utah State even though the USU football and men's basketball games moved to KZNS in 2017. With Bonneville taking over operations of The Zone, I wonder if KVNU will have an opportunity to once again become the flagship station of the Utah State Aggies. Maybe Cache Valley Media Group will make Bonneville International an offer they can't refuse! 😉

Does anyone know who's responsible for updating the website for The Zone now? Is it Bonneville or Ryan Smith's organization? Gordon Monson and Utah Car Cents with Austin Horton are still listed on The Zone's schedule, so the website is in need of a makeover.

I've often found that things like that are a very low priority.

Does the Zone sound any different (beyond staffing changes)? Curious if Bonneville's imaging people have updated the sweepers, branding, etc.?

I've only tuned into The Zone a couple of times since Bonneville took over operations of the station, and the sweepers sound the same to me. At least it's the same deep voiced male announcer that's always done sweepers for The Zone in the past. The biggest programming change I've noticed is that some Fox Sports football program is airing in the 10 AM-Noon time slot on Saturdays now, instead of Utah Car Cents with Austin Horton & Jeff Miller. I'm really ticked off about that programming change, because I looked forward to listening to Utah Car Cents every Saturday. 😠AFAIK, it was the last automotive and transportation related radio show on the air in the Salt Lake City market. To make matters worse, NPR also discontinued airing the "best of" episodes of Car Talk shortly after Bonneville took over operations of The Zone. Not a big deal to most people, but if you're interested in cars and other forms of transportation like me, it feels like losing an old friend to not have Utah Car Cents and the best of Car Talk on the radio anymore.

There are a lot of really good car podcasts now.
If you're into new cars, Consumer Reports has one called "Talking Cars" which is quite interesting. There are *lots* of enthusiast ones, too.

Also, the Best of Car Talk has moved to a podcast model.

Thanks to henry and CA for the suggestions on automotive shows. Because I'm an old fart who's kind of set in his ways, I prefer to listen to radio the old fashioned way. But I'm going to have to get used to the podcasting world, because more and more audio content is moving online. Besides, I was listening to the best of Car Talk online via an NPR station in McGrath, AK (KSKO), so transitioning to podcasts shouldn't be very difficult. 🙂 And FWIW, Utah Car Cents with Austin Horton is going to be a podcast from now on.

If you have an iPhone, just use iTunes to download podcasts.
If you use an android phone, there are a plethora of "podcatcher" apps. I use PocketCasts (free). And if you are experienced enough to stream an NPR station in McGrath, AK then you will be overqualified using a podcatcher. They are pretty easy. You'll figure it out in less than 10 minutes.
The best part is you can skip commercials.
