The idea of KSL putting a sports talk station on 820 AM seems highly unlikely. I can't see why they would, since The Zone and ESPN 700 are the 800 pound gorillas for sports talk in this market. Moreover, EWTN (along with EMF) seems to be expanding its reach and showing up on more stations; so I doubt they'd be willing to give up 820, especially since it's licensed for 50 KW days and critical hours. Besides, why would KSL need a separate station for sports talk that's limited to 2,500 watts at night when they already have a 50 KW blowtorch on AM that covers most of the Western U.S.? It doesn't make any sense to me especially in light of KFNZ going dark, but stranger things have happened. FWIW: I checked the FCC database and the various radio trade sites and can't find anything to confirm the rumor. But I did find this job opening listed on All Access, which might just be KSL looking to replace Doug Wright or some other host: www.allaccess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=70173

The Truth Network website still shows KUTR, but I'm not sure that means much. I wonder if someone got confused since KUTR was first put on the air by Bonneville a long time ago.
The job opening David linked to specifically mentions "current affairs" and I don't see any mention of sports in there. If you're going to talk sports, the host better know a lot about it or the program is going down the tubes real fast. I don't see a connection.
I think the likelihood of KSL going all-sports is pretty much non-existent. Adding a general sports talk show to complement the Cougars show they already have could make sense. There are plenty of hours of leased time (read: infomercials) that they could reclaim on the weekends. If they really wanted to buy a station, I hear there's a 107.1 that's looking for an owner. I'm pretty sure the number of stations isn't an ownership cap issue.

Speaking of 107.1 (KEGH-FM): if anyone here has a Wikipedia account, please update the station's Wiki page to reflect the fact the station has been silent since March 31st, or April 4th according to the application submitted to the FCC. Although KEGH-FM is still on the air with a dead carrier, I hardly think that qualifies as broadcasting.

Looks like Drew Steele (weekday evenings on KSL Newsradio) is missing from the schedule and bio pages on ksl.com.

Looks like Drew Steele (weekday evenings on KSL Newsradio) is missing from the schedule and bio pages on ksl.com. Yes, he's gone from the station's line-up, and there's nothing replacing him yet from 7-11 PM weeknights. Hopefully KSL will bring back The Nightside Project with Ethan Millard and Alex Kirry in that time slot. I never cared for Drew Steele's program. The few times I listened to his show I was really put off by his over zealousness, especially for an evening radio show. He sounded like a male version of Amanda Dickson to me, and I don't care for her or Doug Wright at all. Once Amy Iverson left The Browsers and KSL ditched The Nightside Project, I stopped listening to KSL except for periodic news, weather and sports updates. KSL's ratings have been trending downward ever since the April 2017 books, so it appears they've alienated part of their old audience without managing to attract new listeners.

KSL's ratings do tend to trend down in the late spring and summer and then go back up when fall hits. They've done that for years now. I wouldn't read anything into the current trends.

I couldn't see any part of Bonneville making a deal with the U. Both BYU and Bonneville are arms of the LDS Church. I think that rivalry alone would doom any chance of U sports on a Bonneville station.

The only possibility I can see with this scenario is KSL doing an LMA time brokerage with 820 to broadcast sports programing or BYU games they can't fit into KSL's schedule.

You are correct. KUTR was sold in 2008, however the rumor in this thread was attached to 820 and KSL. I suppose I should ask radiorelic if the rumor came from Facebook which has already been a source of nonsense rumors.

What I wish that KSL would do when there is a BYU event happening during the main part of their broadcast day is split the AM signal and have BYU on that and afternoon drive (or whatever) on the FM. They could also do this when there is some news event (like a senate hearing) that they want to provide live audio on.

I've checked my usual sources and can't find anything to confirm this rumor, so I think someone got confused because of Bonneville's past connection with 820. And don't even get me started on Facebook: they've been spamming me with emails three or four times per day ever since I signed up with them.

Very unlikely that's going to happen. If KSL ever splits the AM & FM they get their Nielsen ratings split as well and they want the AM & FM combined.

I heard a promo spot on KLO this morning during Jim Rome's show indicating that the station will be carrying all Weber State games again this season. So, with KLO having Jim Rome and the Weber State games, KSL being the affiliate for BYU, KALL 700 having the Utes, and KVNU (610 AM) carrying the Aggies games, that wouldn't leave much top tier sports programming for a sports talker on 820. I'd say it's dead, Jim.
