I've heard that there are some issues with AM MW Band reception in the Logan area, particularly with KSL 1160, occurring over the last couple of months.
Anybody here having issues, or noticing any particular symptoms?

Mr. Buzz on 1150 and Mr. Hum on 1170 and the ever-increasing AM noise floor. What have you heard is being noticed?

John Dehnel said he was told there was a constant "pop-pop-pop'ing"....sort of like the old Russian "woodpecker". Also, just the "ever-increasing AM noise floor".
I get hum on every strong signal, in Midvale. Never have been able to figure out why. Plasma and LCD TV sets and monitors are my biggest complaint, in the apartments. That whine is miserable....S9 +3, to S9 +9 at times, especially on MW and around 3 MHz and 9 MHz.

I have a computer that throws a massive interference signal across portions of the band so it goes off when I listen to AM.
Ken, would it have something to do with the HD signal? I remember when I lived in SLC, DXing was darn near impossible on 1150 and 1170 because of the HD hash. Here in NE Wyoming, I can just about get KSL to lock at night on HD.

I'll have to see what the e-mails said. When the IBOC first came on, we heard lots of complaints about "something next to KSL's signal", but not about direct interference. Some people with very good, wideband radios did notice the background noise increase a bit. This sounds like it might be actual RFI. I could use a recording of it, I guess.

Ah, the Russian woodpecker . . . that brings back a lot of memories of SWL'ing in the 1970's and early '80's. Too bad that the HF bands have fallen out of use lately for international broadcasting. What will people rely on for information in the event of a massive internet outage similar to the Blackberry outage that is going on now? For what it's worth, I've noticed a pulsating type noise that's more or less across the AM band at my location. Depending on the time of day, it can show up at the bottom end, middle portion, or top end (1600 kHz) of the band. For some reason the pulsating noise doesn't seem to affect the expanded band portion of the AM band. I haven't been able to track down the source yet, but I suspect it's some RFI noisemaker originating from a nearby business, as the noise seems to vanish on the weekends.
