I caught the classical music (none of which I recognized) on KNFL in Salt Lake today and the signal was very strong around 9PM. Much stronger than I've heard it before. Has anyone else noticed them being stronger than usual? Maybe they fixed up the transmitter/antenna/groundsystem?

Havent surfed AM since April, but I will check it on the way back to SLC tomorrow. Another thing I have noticed as of a few days ago, KSOP's translator on 96.7 has been booming. Not sure whats up with that.

When K244DH was originally installed in the Oquirrhs it could be heard reasonably well up to North Davis County. My theory is that the modulation was kept very low to minimize interference with co-owned KQMB. I did notice that it was noticeably more modulated than usual, though still a bit lower than standard.

K244DH "caused" problems (that means perceived as "interfering" but many, many miles outside the protected contours) with KQMB, Levan and KKEX, Preston with as little as THREE WATTS TPO! Draw your own conclusions....

Ok, so why is K244DH retransmitting KSOP from the same place as their main? It would be nice if it was KUSU like Radio-Locator said. Any ideas?

It was KUSU for a long time. First from the east side of town, then from the Oquirrhs. It was actually relaying K204BO on 88.7 from near Payson. Then KNKL came on the air and blew away reception. Since K244DH is in the commercial band and outside the protected contour of KUSU it has to relay some other signal and can't be fed by microwave/satellite/etc. That's why it moved. They tried to pick up the main KUSU signal from there but it never quite worked, though I think Friend could fill in some more details there. After that it was sold.
There was some discussion a long time ago about how some people in the foothills out near Farnsworth can apparently pick up that translator better than the mains. It could be that the transmitting elements are pointed at a lower angle than normal to try to minimize the interference to KKEX and KQMB, so the signal isn't shooting over them.

That makes sense about the lower angles, and why it doesn't come in quite perfect here. Not that it matters much any more, but I've lost 96.7 as a DX frequency. Today is my last full day in Salt Lake.

We were able to get a usable signal on Little Farnsworth from our main Clarkston site.....just barely....and it was heavily filtered on the input side to pick up just 91.5 but it worked well enough that it raised the ire of a few who felt we were impinging on the signals of KKEX and KQMB even though we were well outside either station's protected contour. Rather than operate at licensed power and continue to field complaints of questionable validity, management first decided to try operating at the greatly reduced power of 3 watts. When the complaints didn't stop (and actually increased!), it was decided to "move it on down the road"; that it wasn't worth the trouble given the marginality of the signal quality.
Off hand, what is KNKL's licensed power and antenna location? They sure do clobber K204BO in Utah county north of Lindon.

Today is my last full day in Salt Lake. DX! It was very hard for me to leave Salt Lake and move to Tahoe but it was the best move for us, the kids love it here my wife was unsure of the weather and yea we get snow but the Summers here are great. I always have the smell of pine around and the people here are great neighbors sooo. And the Lake wow..... I wish you well in your future and your new home and city that you will be living in and like me even though I'm 500 miles away from SLC I'm still interested on the Salt Lake Radio Scene. So we can be distant SLC Radio Posters here together. Good Luck DX. DSpete

Yup, "DX posters". Thanks for the send off. This doesn't mean I won't be back in SLC every once and awhile. I will still pop in from time to time to help when my boss absolutely needs my assistance (The Scorpions/Rush concerts in August...hint hint). I also won't be too far away, and I'll frequent this board as much as I do now. I've been in Utah for five years, so it is a good chunk of my life and a big part of it to remember. And don't forget, I have started the Wyoming Radio forum if anyone is interested. Oh yeah and, if I do get some Utah TV/FM stations via strange propagation, I will inform y'all. Don't forget about MILOFM either wyoradio.proboards.com/kudx.ubstudios.com

KNKL is a C1 up near Brigham City and Tremonton basically near the northeasternmost part of the Great Salt Lake. I think that's where KYLZ was when it was serving Cache Valley but I'm not sure. It definitely gets out well.
