All of the big TV and FM stations in L.A. have their transmitters atop Mt. Wilson. Firefighters are saying tonight that the flames may put them off the air soon.

So sad, but imagine this happening to Farnsworth. Its scary to think of fire taking down a TV or FM station.

It wasn't a fire, but the loss of the World Trade Center in NYC devastated the TV landscape in a way that would be comparable to the loss of Mt Wilson. About 86% of the LA market gets TV through cable/satellite/MDS, so they probably wouldn't notice much (I presume the major stations already feed the redistributors directly instead of off-air), but that still leaves a lot of people who will be SOL. And that doesn't even count the possible loss of the world famous observatory which would be a huge blow to the scientific community.
Today at least things seem a little more optimistic, but that isn't saying much.
