For those of you who didn't know, which is probably none of you on this board, here is a video I made of a typical bandscan of the FM dial from South Salt Lake. Obviously this isn't all the stations that I can receive, just the strongest ones that the scan stopped on. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYVePrvaQhg

Definitely not what you'd expect to come out of the speakers on "FM100" (point 3).
You can see the HD signals as they come in, too.

Wait wait wait.
K256AE on 99.1 is still on the air? I haven't heard them in years. I thought they got shut down as part of the (now derailed) move of KUDE.
You've got a really nice setup there to be able to get the Logan stations that clearly.

The Logan stations I can hear are hit and miss. I guess I was in luck when I filmed this, usually the scan doesn't catch Logan, especially now after I rotated the antenna east. The stations I usually hear that the scan didn't catch are: KTCE 92.1 (have had this come in just like a local) KCYQ 97.7 (Recorded the ID, it was that clear) 93.7 from Richfield occasionally makes it up here. I also hear KVFX on 94.5 a lot, and KUSU (and KUSR) come in on occasion. I have never been able to get HD on KUSU due to being in SLC and the sidebands being torn apart by the two translators on either side of it. That radio you see is my new baby. In June and July I caught a lot of E-skip on it. www.ubstudios.com/dx/slctropo.html

On a recent visit, my friend's car radio wouldn't receive it. It used to be quite clear in the Salt Lake Valley.

I've been using a C Crane FM transmitter on 99.1 to transmit my MP3 throughout my house and yard, so I hadn't noticed that the Utah mountain translator was back on. It does seem just a little weaker than it used to be.
I have the same Sony HD tuner and have been happy with it. I have a big FM antenna aimed at the Oquirrhs but I still notice some HD signals disappear for a day or two then reappear. I suspect that they just shut off the HD when they feel like it, for whatever reason. Or maybe the already weak digital signals actually fade below threshold, but I doubt it.
I keep trying to lock in distant AM in HD but have had no luck. Several distant AM stations show the HD symbol at night, including KOA, KNX and sometimes KFI, but they won't lock into the digital signal. Has anyone ever locked into a distant AM HD signal?

I try the same thing Terry. I have seen the HD "Blink" on more than just the ones you mentioned, but no lock on anything but the locals.
The freqs I can get the blink on (occasionally) are:
640 - KFI 850 - KOA (3 bars but no decode on the Sony) 950 - KRWZ (Denver) 1040 - WHO 1070 - KNX 1110 - KFAB 1390 - KGNU (Denver) 1690 - KDDZ (Denver)

I checked up on K256AE today and it's booming. I was picking it up fairly well even up in Ogden where it started fighting with K256BB that translates KKEX Kix 96.
