Kenglish made a great comment in Broadcasting Magazine this week about Master Control Operators. Yes we need them even in the day of increasing automation!

Submitted by: Ken English ken.english@ksl.com 7/27/2009 10:16:28 AM EDT Location: Salt Lake City Occupation: Broadcast Engineer Before you get all high on the idea of "hubbing" (who came up with THAT word, now?), take a look at Equity Broadcasting. How many times did I see most of their "stations" sitting in black (COLOR black) for hours. Lights off, and nobody home! Use Master Control automation more efficiently, by having time for operators to double-check and triple-check the playlists. Use MC automation to create multicast channels that can bring in viewers (and income) when your current main-channel programming is of no interest to a viewer.Use MC automation to do the redundant, error-prone tasks, like recording incoming feeds on time. Your MC operator is the pilot of your plane. He doesn't do that much when you look in the front of the plane, but you sure want to know he's there to keep you flying staright and level.

And with that I agree 100%. Automation is a tool. It can be use correctly or incorrectly. It's neither inherently good nor bad. It's how you use it that determines the outcome.

You missed the other comment:
Why did I have to change the official title of the "front of the plane" to appease the obscenity-content filter? Duh!
I wonder if this board allows the word "cockpit"?

I wonder if this board allows the word "cockpit"? Answer: yes, although I did have to fix it when I set the board up because the way Proboards set it by default was broken.
