I haven't listened to this service yet, but it seems like something that would introduce new music... again, what has the "utility" of traditional terrestrial radio done recently? :-?
It has received heavy publicity for an Internet radio startup, even in the consumer press, largely due to the presence of former Clear Channel/New York managers Rob Williams and Tim “Romeo” Herbst. Now, Goom Radio, the U.S. counterpart to the French Internet radio site, is available in an “alpha” version. So we took a “First Listen” to Goom’s Top 40 “Just Hits” format.
It’s important to note that this is the alpha version. And that the most intriguing aspect of Goom, the “create your own station” and “record a message” features, aren’t up and running yet. But so far, Goom’s Just Hits is a well-produced, hosted channel not unlike the French CHR format we reviewed shortly after the U.S. announcement in March. And when we went to the Goom site, it was the Just Hits channel that opened automatically.
Just Hits is one of seven available formats –referred to here, in a likely holdover from the French site deemed just goofy enough to get attention, as “radios.” The others are Tastemaker (New/Indie Rock), Pop Top 20, Explicit Content (Hip-Hop), Rock-It Radio (Alternative/Emo), and Madonna and Michael Jackson channels. There is also a longer list of individual shows, at least some of which also air as part of individual formats. Many of the formats are tie-ins with other Websites. Just Hits is co-branded with Artist Direct. Explicit Content ties in with AllHipHop.com.
