Let me get this straight, KBULL remotes for me are like 1-2 every 2 months if that, so I don't work for or listen to them that often. When I do however, I see now why it is the number one country station in the SLC metro area.
KBULL seems more local than the other stations. Sure they give out a bunch of stuff, but beyond that, they have fun doing it. This evening I worked outside of the E-Center (for KBULL) doing the days of 47 rodeo promotion. I gotta tell you, having the inflatable, and a good attitude will get you far in this town.
1015 the Eagle was a mere 50 feet away from me, and didn't get nearly half as many people as I did.
Listening to KBULL is a lot of fun, and I hate country. They have fun with the traffic, the weather, and the DJs always seem to have a spark in their breaks.
Not even KBER or KHTB pull this off, and I work more for them than any other station at Citadel.
Other stations need to take note. Instead of having some boring talking head on in the afternoon/evening drive, put some fun into it. People are tired and wanting to get home as fast as possible. Don't bore them to death. Also, keep the songs varied...*cough* KBER. Playing the same song every day gets really old really fast.
I could rant all day about that but this is about KBULL. Its a fun station, and surprisingly feels more local than 90% of the other stations here in Salt Lake. Kudos KBULL.

Somebody said a long time ago that K-BULL presents like an old style Top40 or CHR station, only they play country songs. Would you agree?

Yes, very much so. I don't like country, but the songs are new and they aren't played (too) often.

I been working events for years, I remember back in the older days before the bull wasnt heard of and it was KKAT and KSOP.. Kat did alot of the same things the bull does now. and now days this market is known for the competition between the country stations, alot of promoters dread coming to this market because of it because one station will try to out do the other station etc.. and it drives the people in charge nuts.. anybody have any idea how many times stations have been warned for doing stuff they are not supposed too.. let me tell you alot!! As for them having more of a crowd, let me guess which station was giving out more etc.? Honestly people are running around to each station to see what they can get for free, most people listen switch around stations especially between us and the bull, most people arent loyal.. Do you ever wonder how many people we give shirts too and they probably never wear?? I noticed as being a small independent station is the corporate big boys get what they want because they have clout and can bribe, offer money, etc..I think its a bunch of BS.. the average listener has no idea what happens behind the scenes. Alot of it is smoke and mirrors and some people will see it.. Now each radio station is great in its own way, each is unique and does good and bad at different things.. I am interested to see where everyone lines up with PPM, because its accurate no books.. should be interesting to say the least... just my rant ;D

Interesting to hear the perspectives of a "street teamer" and an on-air host.
Personally, I still love KSOP. No one else anywhere I've ever lived strikes that 'right balance' of older (mainly 80s-early 90s) country with great modern hits and low burn.
K-Bull does have a lot of "energy" though, and I think they do a good job of getting free TV exposure... or at least, used to. Their traffic reporter can be heard in Seattle (and lives here?) on KKWF 100.7 the Wolf.
PPM Note: Our two country stations are basically at a dead heat with each other. The audience really is split 50/50.

The funny thing is, working at Citadel since September, I've never met most of the DJs that work in the building. I do know all of KBER and KHTB's DJs, and most of The Ends, minus Chunga (and I don't care to meet him). I know none of K-Bull's, and only Dixie Lee on Country Legends. As far as the Bee, I've met Todd and Erin (nice people) and Shawn Stevens (also nice). The sports and AM stations I have no idea who they are.
Egos definitely are an issue at Citadel, but most of the people there are all laid back. Minus Chunga, who I loathe, everyone else is pretty cool, and I do love my job.
Being a Remote Tech, I know first hand that each station has its "regulars". Every event we have, seemingly the same people show up. The good thing is, they are loyal listeners. The bad thing is, we're told that if nobody "new" shows up, the remote is probably a failure. I have no idea why I'm supposed to worry about that so much. Given I don't work K-BULL remotes often, I've seen a different side of the population at their remotes.
Every listener is different. I've heard the same thing about KSOP, Seattle. At the George Strait concert, they certainly had a lot of fans, because they were playing more of his older stuff. I wish we would have promoted legends bigger than we did (wouldn't be my fault even though I was manning the booth).
Other than that, I think we worry to much about ratings. People are still listening to radio, regardless of how dreadful the news may be about it.
Hope my late night reply makes some sense to you guys.

Great responses! Kbull and KSOP are unique stations and they do have their own loyal listeners.. I guess i do gotta clarify the differences between Remotes (paid) and the Remotes that arent (like the concerts) yeah you do have your loyal listeners that show up to the remotes because they are usually listening then when at the shows all the stations are in everyones face so the loyalty I dont think is there as much.. We all know of one guy that shows up to every event he can, the leech, name starts with a P, anyone in the biz knows him lol.. I dont know how many times he has got pissed off at me and told me to f-off and he was never listening again then the next day he would call in complain that he wasnt the right caller and that he was doin the best he can, which I wish he would do the best he can to umm forget where he put his phone haha, all in all I think us as a little guy is holding our own in the big giant corporate world..anyways.. oh yeah Gridlock does live here in Salt Lake, does his traffic via ISDN from home (lucky dude) i believe, at least that is what Leslie, former gal in charge of Metro here in SL before they closed up shop told me.. Are you having to work the Kenny Show dxstuboy?

K-Bull deserves every rating point they get. They work hard and it shows!
Back in the late-90s all the Citadel stations were like that. I was a B98.7 fan when it acted like an 80s, 90s top-40 without rap. Lots of listener calls all day. Unpredictability. Simon and Brady. Ben Cross's Corroded Cassette Collection on the Awesome 80s at 8 request show. Now THAT was a station!
You can now see why it pains me to see things of late: The logo occasionally turning all-pink (i.e men not welcome here), all Phil Collins blocks, Marie Osmond, John Tesh, and Ryan Seacrest. The station died.
Thank heavens K-Bull has survived! Not sure how it's done it, but I wish them well!
As for KSOP, C.J. .... we all know Arbitron is acting like a mafia, and that can't help. The trouble with 'SOP is that it still lags with imaging. It's better than ever, but it's still a bit tired. The 24/7 staff will come in handy, especially as crud happens in the world ... you've got a staff to talk about it.

Yeah, I will be at the Kenny Chesney concert. I'm guessing I will be working for Country Legends like I did at George Strait.
One of the guys from KSOP squirted me at George Strait. I was wearing a K-BULL shirt since Legends doesn't have shirts.

Confession time. I've never been to a radio remote. Never really saw the point. Thought about it once or twice when I was already out doing other things and was in the vague general vicinity of where the remote was, but it would be just too much of a PITA. You may squirt me now. Speaking of PPMs, does anyone know if KSOP will be subscribing or whether everything will stay status quo?

Remotes usually are a waste of time, but being my job, I wouldn't get paid without them.

Hope the advertisers don't see your remark "remotes are a waste of time..." They are expensive for those advertisers.
Remotes can be scary for the air talent. Imagine showing up, trying to say whatever you could on the air to get people there and the only ones that show up are the people missing teeth who show up to every radio stations event just to get free crap. I'm not just talking about Vernal either, plenty of those in Salt Lake!
Or, remotes can be a HUGE success! Sometimes success comes silently... I liked the time I was doing a remote at a car dealership and 45 minutes into the remote that NO ONE came to (or at least the table we had set up) our station's salesman came up to us and said "GOOD JOB!! We just sold a car!" ... I was like, 'how did we sell a car, no one has come up to us...' The good thing was, even though people weren't hovering around our station tent, we were getting the message out. Dealerships and any other client would rather have them spend money than get the free stuff at the remote.
The Ideal remote for the airtalent are those where people flock to the business or event because they heard you on it. This happens rarely because you really have to have something to offer them that they want... I remember as a young boy going to 'free bungy jumping day' with Fischer Todd and Erin (maybe Erin wasn't there yet) from KISN 97. We drove up thinking we were going to get free bungy jumping at the old 49th street Galleria... unfortunately, so did 1000 other people as the parking lot was crammed full... we sat around, watched for a bit and then left. But for The KISN egos of that day, I am sure they loved the response. I never paid to bungy jump, neither did my family... so judge success how you will.
FINAL COMMENTARY: I mention all of this because its hard to know how successful a station really is by one remote at an event where people are walking by to enter the venue anyway. BUT I do think KBULL Is one of the better stations in the SLC area because they are everywhere. How many times does FOX 13 cover a "KBULL giving away tickets to the person who jumps in the mud and finds them before everyone else" type of thing. KBULL is fun, exciting... If only every station was, then radio would be better off.

I agree Bald, thats why I posted this.
My opinion of the station has since soured however. We were a huge presence at the Kenny Chesney concert and I'm sure the powers that be at the station are happy, but something happened that day that made me never want to work another BULL remote ever again, and if I do, I am quitting Citadel.
It's not about the station, its about the people behind the scenes fwiw.

Some people love going through the hoops of trying to get tickets etc, some people don't.. so its good to have variety.. CA as with KSOP subscribing, I doubt it, I mean we are there just the public cant see our numbers.. The fee is ridiculous for two little radio stations to subscribe, but I heard somewhere that when PPM's start up they are required to show all the commercial stations including us? Could be wrong.. ;D anyways DX, the Kenny show was a mess, a few radio stations got screwed and I'm sure you know why, I'm kinda curious as what happened because I am wondering if it is the same thing that I heard.. The news spreads quick in this biz.
