The key to phoners is to make them short... to the point... even where they just ask a question relevant to what you are plugging...
How would the Leno/Conan/Letterman show be without the audiences reaction? Thats how you should focus. I've been to 3 tapings of the Tonight Show with Leno and they tell you when to applause, they tell you when to be loud and clap... DJ's should be instructing their listeners to do that... AND the DJ should never put someone who doesn't sound decent on the air. WITH audience involvement, you get more loyalty and create memories if anything. Just now I listened to two Journey songs on lastfm.com... I think that was the url... anyway, those were the songs I wanted to hear and the radio wasn't going to play them, I know because I wouldn't be able to reach anyone at the station... BUT what if I could? What if I could at least get one on the radio because I talked to a real human... What if I not only heard my song but the DJ surprised me with playing part of my phone call to introduce the song... Thats exciting for someone in and out of radio.
I do have a pet pieve... how do you spell that?? ... and that is when DJ's ONLY play requests from the listeners... you gotta mix it up. Tonight I had two calls about commercials/promos I played... One was about the water slide opening up and hiring life guards... the other was about a new dance club for teens... What if I was recording the caller just asking, "hey, I heard your promo about the water slide re-opening... thats cool! and I heard they are hiring life-guards... what is the # for that?? "
I would then answer with 848 9393, or whatever the number was and remind the audience again of the grand opening... ALL over the intro of a hit song... you do it right, you can do that in :11 seconds. People have it in their heads that someone is answering the phone and their question. BAD ME for not recording those calls!!!!
