Okay, so post switch, my converter box is now up to 35 channels, when it wants to be. My question is, I've looked through the FCC TV database for SLC and see a lot of new stations (smaller translators) attempting to get their signals digital too. The two that come to mind the most are K18FJ (the TBN translator here) and KUCL, channel 26, which is also religious programming. When are these supposed to be on the air or is there still no firm date? I can still receive them in analog, just wondering. Also, speaking of K18FJ, for the past two weeks, it has been nothing but this: www.ubstudios.com/dx/tvlogos/k18fj.jpgSomeone not paying attention? Also, today while on the freeway, I noticed they are doing some tower work on Ensign Peak (Directly above the capitol building in SLC). There was a big crane up there doing something. Could they be putting some DTV on the air soon?

Oh that screen shot is just hilarious. I just hooked up the analog tuner and I can absolutely confirm that he's not making it up. 2 weeks you say? Well, if there's a legal ID whenever LPTV's are required to give it, it's legal. Not very useful, but legal. The pizza pan satellite companies require swapping out the smartcard used for decryption periodically to make sure hackers can't get a foothold. Nobody's put the new card in the receiver that they're using to feed the station. It's really strange that a station owned by the network is using a third party to receive and broadcast it, but maybe that's cheaper than a TVRO setup. I wouldn't think so, but who knows. There are other weird things about me seeing that signal. According to the FCC records, I shouldn't be getting anything, especially on 18 as far as I can tell. From the records, they only have authorization for analog on 36 and digital on 15. They got moved from 18 some time ago. Of course 36 is where KUEN-DT is, so that won't work. There's no record I can find for an STA for 18 at all. Even forgetting that, the licensed analog pattern is 99% due south from what looks like it should be Ensign, yet I can receiving it 25 miles north. Then again, when nobody's bothered to put anything at all usable on the signal, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they weren't operating within the specifications of their license. As for new stations, there aren't any other TV stations up there. There aren't even any CP's for FM stations. Coul dbe some new two-way gear for someone or something. Not sure. Side note: in my research it looks like the two parts of Ensign Peak are actually about 2 miles apart. Doesn't look that way from the ground.

Two miles apart sounds weird to me. I look at that peak almost every day, and I can't see the two miles, but anything is possible. Its probably an optical illusion.
Also if anyone is interested, KUCL-LP 26 (Salt Lake 3ABN affiliate) still has yet to turn on their construction permitted KUCL-LD (RF 8). How much you want to bet that very few people will ever see this channel when it goes digital.
CA, given this station's pattern and where it is in the valley, there is probably nill chance you'd receive it, barring some tropo event.
I think not that many people are going to re-scan their boxes after awhile. Who knows how long they're going to take to turn the digital on anyway.
Edit: There are a few people like me who actually rescan their boxes about every week. I stress a few lol.

Yeah, a few of us are geeks. But that's why we're here, right?
The distance is based on the reading of FCC coordinates. That's assuming that the coordinates are correct. I was trying to look on Google Maps to get an idea of the real distance but I can't even make out where the towers are. Might be something weird with the shadows.

The only LPTVs that I know are working on DTV is Azteca. I saw Alex a couple of days ago, and he will be putting DTV on 39 and 25 "by the end of the year". He might have to move off of 66, if someone claims that frequency....he could go analog on 39 with his CPs.
KUCL 26 could still go on Farnsworth. There was only a passing interest at the time they filed for their CP on 8 at Foothill. TBN told me, years ago, that they probably would wait until "the deadline". John Terrill is a smart guy, so I think he'll be upgrading KEJT on 31 soon. If Bustos is smart, they'll put their radio stations all on DTV, but they need a channel (or, flash-cut).
As for myself, I suspect the FCC will not even force LPTV to go Digital. I think that it will all get lost in the shuffle, as the FCC concentrates on more important issues. Right now, LPTVs on channel 6 are becoming pseudo-"FM" radio stations, so I wonder how the FCC will be able to shut them down (assuming there ever IS a deadline) without looking like an ogre.
Remember the rule that said X-Band AMs had to do AM Stereo? Was that ever enforced? I think the FCC will just say, "If you go Digital, let us know so we can update your paperwork", and that's as far as they may push it.
