Today when entering my school office I thought, 'who should I listen to?'
In my office I don't get a good signal from my home station so I usually stream in the mornings to keep tabs on other shows, get ideas and try something new. Now, this morning I decided to listen to kiisfm.com for the Ryan Seacrest show. Upon research into Ryan Seacrest I was amazed at how many stations in the country play Ryan in one way shape or form. ESPECIALLY in the east. Locally Zht plays the AT 40 show Saturdays (or at least they used to) and the BEE plays his syndication in the afternoons.
Now, this has been a source of contention between the old timers and everyone else in radio who either think that Ryan is good, or that he doesn't compare to the classic Dj's of the past..... But I have a question... why is Ryan so successful if he is so bad? Could it be that the old-timers are stuck in the past and the old way of doing things? Shouldn't radio and the jocks in general evolve to what is successful. Would Dj's of the past even be popular today?
Also, what is so bad about syndicating Ryan on KBEE. Who do we have locally anymore that is known for their show (that isn't on a morning show) rather than their time slot? I think personality in general is lacking... and, not that Ryan's show on KBEE is any better, but Ryan is not any worse by any means. If KBEE gets Ryan through a barter system, far cheaper than having someone in studio for more $$, than what is the problem? Ryan's voice is affiliated with Hollywood. And hollywood still sells. Besides, would you rather hear about hollywood types from someone who actually talks to them or from someone who just reads up on prep each day and surfs the web??
In general, local is better. But during a time slot when there isn't as much listener interaction, I think it is a good idea to syndicate a show that fits into your format. Mornings, Afternoons and Nights should be local, Middays and Overnights during the week could benefit from syndication.
