Reports from over-there are saying the music mix is still being tweaked at 97.9 towards more hot music, including Hoobastank, Coldplay, OneRepublic, etc... Along with other AC fare...
Seriously?
What is missing from this saturated market? Oh yeah, Smooth Jazz... What about classic alternative, what about Non-Rhythmic CHR? Dance? FM Sports? Competing FM News/Talk or all-news?
Thoughts??

Competing FM News/Talk or all-news? Too expensive. Sorry to say it, but radio has been on a 3 year revenue decline nationally and start up costs for all-news would be excessive. As for talk, all the top hosts are tied up by Clear Channel owned KNRS or Hannity on KSL. It would be hard. What is missing from this saturated market? Oh yeah, Smooth Jazz... Agreed. what about Non-Rhythmic CHR? Dance? Dance appears to be stuck in the non-commercial/large market venue. It would be hard to gain audience off "Movin" "ZHT" and "U92" all playing some pop/dance cuts. As for Non-rhythmic CHR, 107.9 is doing the best it can as a Hot AC. There is no more non-rhythmic CHR playlist... I didn't realize that until a few weeks ago when I examined the CHR/Top 40 and Hot AC charts. They are almost different worlds now. While KBZN would be a strong signal for the format, there's only one pro team and NBA just doesn't bill like NFL, MLB... the networks also appear to be tied to KFNZ, KJQS; KZNS, KALL (what is on "call" these days?) Again, start up costs would be high and getting rights away from established players difficult.

Wow. Online playlist looks AC/Hot AC. Why are they even trying with cuts like Bonnie Raitt or Michael McDonald? Trying to make the "old" audience gradually familiar? Everything else looks like a modern A/C format. If that's the case, KICK THE MONIKER AND IMAGING.
EDIT: Started the online stream. Clearly a new brand is coming. "More music. 97 point 9 fm" - kept that same sleepy "Breeze" voice though?!? So, now they can be confused for 99.5 or FM100. Great.
Come December this will get them more cume but no loyalty, as far as I can tell.

All news? No chance. SF is right. Way too expensive. A company with an extensive news-gathering operation might be able to make it work, but not Capital.
They already have a talk station in KLO, so that's not going to happen.
Sports? The market can't support what it has now. KFNZ does somewhat well, but they have the cream of the sports crop. KZNS is barely even registering. KALL is still doing sports, but even with names like Dan Patrick, Jim Rome, and Bill Riley they're barely showing in 12+ themselves. KJQS is nowhere to be found. Adding a fifth sports station would be suicide.
I'm not sure trying to take on FM100 and KOSY is a great idea. KOSY is only doing ok, though it's still better than Breeze was doing.

Stations stations everywhere and not a drop of ingenuity! (Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink)
It's so frustrating to see 9000 stations go after two pies. Finally 104.7 broke out of the mold to bring us something unique. It's too bad Eagle couldn't somehow end up on a wasted Farnsworth stick (105.7 or 97.9, given Simmons owns neither) and we could try some unique stuff (cough, pure dance, cough, cough) on 101.5.

The only day I could see this station "standing out" would be Sundays. FM100 now goes "Soft Sunday Sounds" from midnight to midnight and KOSY for almost all the day... the problem is that this format hits home with the locals, so even if KBZN stays "hotter mixed" (taking from ElChupacabras $0.02 on the other board) AC it still likely won't pull in higher returns.
Again, all I see this doing is grabbing the station additional cume in PPM. It will not help their AQH ratings, i.m.h.o. If they're mostly selling direct (which, I've heard some "local" agency business there - Smiths/Smith's Marketplace, for example) clients they can continue to make 'acceptable' money I guess.
The new mantra in PPM is "your station's format/story becomes more important," which I can't see a "We dropped all smooth jazz circa the start of 2009, after attempting to gain an audience with all Christmas music in Dec. 2008, then 'freshened up' the playlist so our 'average year is now 1998 (guessing)' by the end of 2009 " doesn't seem like a very strong story.
Stories like "Hey, we have recognizable names like Todd & Erin, and our research (hopefully Citadel has some) shows they are one of the most recognized and liked personalities in the market..." "Hey, we've been making some changes to further contemporize our format, but we have been the dominant AC leader for years and have a proven Sunday format and names people trust..." or "Well... we have 1/3 of Fisher, Todd and Erin.... and Peggy Ijams" ... Maybe that last one isn't so great either.
So I guess we'll find out, eh?

I think it's way too early to say that 105.7 is a wasted frequency. Up until now Spanish language music has been left to AM stations and FM rimshots. Hispanics are a noticeable part of the listener base, so it makes sense to target them. Another thing to keep in mind is that a much stronger signal is going to be easier to pick up on cheaper radios. (Yes, I know that's politically incorrect. It's also true.) That's going to give a Farnsworth station an edge.
Now whether or not the *specific* station that's now on 105.7 is a waste or not, I can't tell. I have no working knowledge of any Spanish formats and my Spanish is terrible. I think the only thing we can do is sit back and wait 6 to 12 months and see where the ratings stand. Then we can start making judgments.
If you're looking for a rimshot to try some unique/experimental station on, remember there are at least 3 new rimshot stations coming on air that will need new formats, plus a new Farnsworth station. Who the heck knows when that big shuffle will happen though.

Now CA, you know as well as I do that 105.7 FM is cursed.
There's ghost pirate gold buried under the transmitter! ;D

I know that you all know that location on the dial is a biggie or should I say BIGGIE 97.9 bam right in the middle of the dial now look at 107.9 way down on the side of the dial that almost (If you had an old radio with the little red stick) that barely makes it to the very end of the dial. I'm sorry but 107.9 is a lost cause- no ads - no billboards - no bus signs. Throw it back in Capitals Face...Smooth Jazz 107.9 Betcha better #'s then they have now!! How many people really know about 107.9 anyways I bet most stop at 106.5 for A/C I do agree Smooth Jazz is needed in SLC and 107.9 would be a great choice for it.
After writing this I just realized that 107.9 went more Hit ?? is that right . Ok I'll exit the thread now....

Yeah, D-Pete.
Since you've been gone, 107.9 relaunched and now it sounds really, really good. Better than ZHT, IMHO. But that's okay - you are in Nevada, so you are a bit outside the listening range to know.
