I watched the interview with now partial owner of Sirius XM Liberty Media President and how he felt that Sirius XM could have some Free channels available in the near future.
This could really help the sat radio platform by giving away some of the programming like 80's and some country and rock channels for free. It could become the platform of the future someday and if people heard some of the stuff they have to offer it could raise subs...... They would maybe want to hear all they have to offer.
Terrible coming from a terrestrial Guy like myself but good in some ways? Maybe we would see terrestrial really look at different format styles and really give everyone a choice of different music styles...

I just don't see free satellite as being a loss leader. I don't think they'd have any choice but to run commercials. Then it really isn't all that different from the satellite feeds that terrestrial stations pipe in from somewhere else.
I don't see niched stations showing up much in any sizable market on terrestrial radio either. It just costs too much to buy a station and program to a specialty market. There isn't enough cash flow to sustain a lot of these stations. Maybe that's where satellite should go, since the costs are lower. Make all of satellite free with commercials and have niched programming while terrestrial stations stick to popular genres. Just a thought.
