I checked who was running what while the BYU game was on and I'm definitely confused. The game was on KSL 1160/102.7 and KBYU 89.1 HD2 but was not on 107.9. I'm not sure what there is to gain by running it on 89.1 HD2 since its coverage area is virtually identical to KSL-FM's. Are there translators carrying the HD signal where KSL doesn't have any? That's the only thing I could come up with. Am I missing something? If only one of the BYU Radio stations was going to be carrying the game I would think it would be 107.9 since that can be heard out toward Wyoming where KSL-FM doesn't go.
The other thing that caught my attention was that I heard what to me sounded like full commercials on the BYU Radio feed over 89.1 HD2. That's a non-commercial station and I'm not aware of any exemption for HD subchannels. What I heard sounded like calls to action to me. I don't get it.

Haven't set foot in the building (as an employee) since 2018.
Back then, we took commercials on 89.1 HD2 *very* seriously. Not only for FCC regs, but also BYU's internal accounting. Back in the SiriusXM only days (before 107.9), we considered running spots on air and selling the inventory. But the pushback was that BYU didn't want to dip a toe into that world, for tax and accounting reasons.
My guess (again -- five years dated) is that the split programming was supposed to run on 89.1 HD2 and 107.9, but somebody didn't set up the Axia board quite right.
But again -- just guesses.

I think I see what you're saying, that the non-game programming should have been on both 89.1 HD2 and 107.9 while the game was on the non-broadcast outlets? That makes sense, but is there any other programming where 89.1 HD2 and 107.9 would split? I would have guessed that both were run from the same output and therefore would always be airing the exact same thing.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the BYU games weren't on 107.9 due to the nature of the arrangement with KSL. I would think 1160 would go anywhere 107.9 goes. Other than the fact it's ... AM!!!

1160 can go most anywhere, as long as listeners know to turn off the LED lights and switch-mode power supplies.😉

The game goes to the Sirius feed. But a "local" (non-game) feed goes to 89.1 HD2 (and now 107.9).
The idea is that KSL is the legacy home -- and can sell spots to make money. But the feed on Sirius is a courtesy to BYU alum outside Utah. (Again, that was the philosophy pre-2018).

I guess we can just wait and see what happens Saturday.

The game is on 89.1 HD2 again and now I'm sure it's deliberate. The station ID at a little after 5PM gave the callsign for KBYU only and said BYU Football. I don't know why they're doing that but the programming choice makes no difference to me either way. The problem is that I'm certain I heard a live read commercial. That's a problem.
