Now, they just need to add ferrites to wiring in the appropriate places, and get rid of those absurd "shark fin" antennas.

One would think that with the current stratospheric new car prices, the automakers could spend a few extra bucks for proper RFI shielding and a decent wire/metal antenna. My 2012 Toyota Corolla had the radio antenna built into the rear window defroster, and it worked really well.

What was missed by some of the coverage is that the reversal decision cost Ford exactly nothing. The AM capability has been in the radios the whole time, but Ford had simply chosen to disable it. They proved this by saying that for vehicles that were already sold without AM they will enable it with a software update.
They made the decision to disable AM, they caught negative press for it, they took 5 minutes to re-enable the feature in the radio firmware and now they look like heroes. This was a no-brainer. Whether AM actually works or not is a different matter, though for gas powered cars that won't be a problem. For the electric ones we'll have to see if there is a real problem and whether Ford will make any effort to fix anything that doesn't work. They don't even need to if they don't want to spend any money. They can point and say "you wanted AM, you got it."
