Apparently, WTWW "We Transmit WorldWide" shut down their over-the-air transmissions on Thursday night. They said the cost of electricity did them in.

Dang, that's not good news. WTWW broadcast an oldies/classic hits show on the weekends that I really enjoyed listening to. The number of AM radio stations and shortwave broadcasters which air anything other than "infomercials" and/or nationally syndicated programming has really declined in the past 10-15 years. 😥

Been researching Murray City Power lately, and I got to wondering what it might take to build a small hydro plant, to run a shortwave operation like WTWW. HCJB did that in Ecuador. Murray has a neat little plant that powers their city. I wonder if there's a nice stream near WTWW.

It looks like the WTWW programming is in the process of moving to WRMI shortwave, which makes sense from an economic standpoint. WTWW gets an outlet for their programming by buying time on WRMI, and Radio Miami International is responsible for maintaining the transmission facilities and paying the power bill. It's probably a very similar arrangement to AM stations airing brokered programming during certain dayparts.
