For those who haven't heard . . . both KNFL and KOGN have gone "dark". Both stations are listed in the FCC database as "licensed and silent" as of December 2008, although KOGN didn't go off the air until shortly after 2 PM Tuesday afternoon. KNFL had been silent for about a month prior to KOGN going dark.
For all who enjoy DX'ing, there should be some good opportunities on 1470 and 1490 now with both stations being silent. I'll miss the adult standards format on 1490, but the upside of KOGN being silent is that it will be much easier to hear 1500 KSTP without the adjacent channel "splatter."

Did there happen to be any signoff message at 2, David?
I'm sorry to see them go, but being a pair of graveyarders on the edge of a market was going to be a difficult situation regardless of what was on the station.
An idea I had a while ago would be for 1490/1470 to team up with 1060 KDYL. The edge of KDYL's service area is where KOGN gets strong and ditto for KOGN to KNFL. KOGN/KNFL was mostly off satellite even at the end, right? If they're looking for a turnkey operation, that would do it.
I've asked them for a comment and I'll let everyone know if I get a response.

There was no signoff message, CA. For most of the morning and into the afternoon, the only "programming" on KOGN was a repeating message from Dial Global to call a toll free number to activate the transponder feed. That repeating message came back on after the CNN top of the hour news at 2, and about a minute later the station went silent. So apparently the Dial Global satellite feed was turned off before the station went dark even though the CNN news feed was left on.

Now with 1490 off I'm betting at least one of you guys will hear KUGR from Green River, the station I first worked at. I've heard it from here, amongst the muck on 1490. I've also heard KOWL from Lake Tahoe fame.

The STA request does say that they hope to be back on the air soon with a full staff. They don't elaborate on what a "full staff" means in this case. They don't mention what format the station will be running either, but the FCC doesn't care about that so it's no surprise.
Just as an FYI, Legacy paid $520,000 for the station back in 2005. For a 1kw graveyarder that seems high, especially in such an overadioed market. Today I think they'd get a lot less, but that's just an opinion. I have no inside information.
