I always wondered why, when the media runs an article about upcoming meteor showers, and says the sky will be uncooperative (clouds), why don't they mention that you can sometimes hear the FM stations "ping" on the meteor trails, or even see a bit of noise on the low-VHF bands. You might even get a channel 2 or similar DTV signal (or hear the pilot carrier at +310 KHz) for a moment.

Do you think the average person would care?

If they were disappointed to miss seeing the meteors, they might think it's cool to just sit in their car and listen on the radio for the sound. Actually, they might hear more than they would have seen. Too bad you have to be out in the boonies to have many open channels, though.

Maybe, but trying to do that is going to be way above the heads (both literally and figuratively ) of almost everyone listening, and trying to describe how to do it and why it would be cool in 5-10 seconds just isn't going to happen. The only realistic way I could see talking about that would be a full news package and I don't think that would be an easy sell to most ND's who are looking for broad appeal stories. Talking to average people about garden variety AM DXing is difficult enough. I explain how they can pick up KFI or KNX or KNBR and so on and they say "Oh, I don't have SiriusXM." *facepalm*

Saw two, side-by-side, about 10:30 PM tonight. They were about 45-degrees elevation, coming from the south, with two burning meteors, and two distinct ionization trails. The moon was near full, and skies were a bit hazy/polluted. The predictions are for about 60-75 meteors per hour, best visibility a couple of hours before dawn. I wonder what it would be like on the desert, and with clear skies and no moon! And, a radio with an Omni antenna, and clear spectrum. Maybe next year.
