The obituary of Danny Andreason mentions that for the first 14 of his ~28 years at KSL-tv, he was the driver/operator of KSL's satellite uplink truck.
Are satellite uplink trucks still a thing that local stations own? I assume that there are now other, lower cost, options for all but extremely remote situations, which are probably very rare.

I am told that KSL still has a sat truck, but it is rarely used. The one Danny drove was called "Starwest-5", as was the downlink dish across the street from the studio. That dish was dismantled a year or two ago. The original truck, affectionately known as "Deathstar-5", was sold to a company that added pumps and a tank, and cleaned septic tanks. It was seen on SLC streets for years, with the black paint job and the three-color stripes. I'll be anxious to know if the other major stations still have trucks.
