If it was a Neumann U87 Ai, that was the personal mike of Casey Kasem, would that make a difference? It was expected to bring in $1K to 2K at auction this past week. After 34 bids, it went for $28,800 Wow! www.julienslive.com/auctions/catalog/id/419Interesting reading.

Considering, I can't even legally *return* a microphone once it's been used (spit/health reasons), I'd say $0.
I get the nostalgia of Casey Kasem, so I'm not surprised people would pay that much for a piece of history.
That said, I'd get more excited if it was an RE20.

How is a returned, or used, mike any more of a health hazard than one that is used by various people every day or night in a club or radio station? Many performers even put the windscreen in their mouth, and cover the pressure slots with their hands (while complaining about feedback 😳, no less).
I once caught a weekend parttimer at KSL radio, about to spray alcohol in to a microphone she said "smells funny". She also complained about the smell of fabric softener that was used on the control room carpets to cut down on static electricity.

I always found the KSL blimps to be kinda gross.
Classical 89's solution was to change the foam between announcers. Each brought in their own headphones and mic sock.

Yeah, that foam got kinda gross. John Dehnel kept some replacement wind screens around. I like the idea of just staying back from the mike a bit. A GobbStopper helps, too. 😄

You'd get more excited for an RE20 instead of a Neuman??? Why on gods green earth?
An RE20 is nice enough and when you know how to use it right and process it well, it can sound good... but my Shrue SM7B and Heil Pr40 sound better
The Neumann is like the cadillac of microphones
People just want the RE20 because its in about every radio station everywhere... i worked at one station that had 24k gold plated RE20s

Yeah. Perhaps it's just the way Classical 89 had pumped up the their Neumann 102/103s with the studio compressor, but they were totally unforgiving. You could hear me SWALLOW or swish my tongue in my mouth.
The RE20 didn't use phantom power. And even with compression, it was the most "neutral" sounding mic I ever used (at least for my voice). These days with internet production(S, nobody seems to care about sound so I use a $30 monoprice stick mic. (So, I clearly DO NOT know what I'm talking about on this topic, lol).
