I'm beginning to think Frank's message on 1580 is going to run forever. 🙂 I'm still hearing it on the Northern Utah SDR this morning, which makes me wonder if the deal to sell 1580/99.9 fell through. Considering that the new owner was supposed to take control of KWLO on December 1st, 2021, the consummation seems to be taking longer than expected.

Pardon my ignorance. What is SDR?

Pardon my ignorance. What is SDR? SDR stands for software defined radio. With an SDR, the electronic components which are normally incorporated in a shortwave radio or communications receiver are incorporated into a software program that operates on a personal computer or an embedded system. There are SDR receivers all over the world online, and they can be accessed through cell phone apps or via the Kiwi SDR web site. Most SDR's have a 60-90 minute daily time limit, so if you like to spend several hours DX'ing on the weekends, a conventional shortwave receiver is probably a better choice. However, if you live in an area with a homeowner's association or an apartment with restrictions on outdoor antennas, using an online SDR is a great way to listen to the radio spectrum without having to put up an antenna.

The announcement of the sale wasn't made until a month ago. At this point the only Commission filing has been for KPVO (which hasn't been approved.) Nothing has been filed yet for KWLO or K260DS. I'm not sure what that means.

Thank you, David, for that explanation. I didn't know such a thing existed. That's cool. I come at my love of radio as more of a listener than "creator" so to speak. So my knowledge is more to do with formats and regular call letters )I've just recently started learning about translators) than about spectrums and wave patterns and the like. I did enjoy DXing as a kid. I didn't know it was called that, then. I just knew at night I could listen to Mother Love on KFI in Los Angeles from my bedroom in Kearns, Utah and sometimes it would fade in and, of course, just when it was getting interesting, it would fade down to nothing. I remember one night, thinking we got a new local oldies station on 1520. I listened for a while and realized I was hearing KOMA in Oklahoma City. It started to do the customary fading after a while but, when I first tuned in, it was booming in like a local. If you guys want to move this to another thread or delete it, I understand. I know I'm going way off topic here. But Clear Channel, now iHeart, used to have a number you could call that was a radio hooked up to a phone line. Their main number was 801-908-1300 and so, in the middle of the night, I just kept calling sequential numbers and when I got to 801-908-1311 it was playing, I think at the time, KALL 910. So, just because, I started pushing buttons. I think if I pushed 6 it would move from AM to FM and 7 and 9 would move up and down the Salt Lake radio dial. I used to use it to listen to Jazz games and stuff when I was out of town and had flat rate long distance wherever I was visiting. In 2002, I was visiting a friend in Wisconsin and she and I listened to a lot of Salt Lake radio on her speaker phone using that line. I don't remember when it quit working. I'm sure it wasn't intended for guys like me. This, of course, was way before the days that I had access to internet streams. I called that number just now and it's been disconnected. I hope at least some of you found this either interesting or amusing or something. Happy day!

During the Eagle Mountain Storage commercial on KSRR 1400 AM on February 20, 2022, Frank just say his name without mentioning Kosy 96.7 at all.

James, that statement was of questionable value two and a half weeks ago when you first posted it. It has no value today. Please make any future posts relevant and truthful.

Can someone in the Salt Lake/Provo area check to see if 1580 is actually on the air? I tried listening to KWLO on the Northern Utah SDR earlier this morning and heard nothing but static. I wonder if this means the new owner is getting ready to launch their format on 1580.

1580 is running a loop (maybe 2 hours long) of Governor Cox’s latest “bi-monthly” news conference followed by dozens of non-commercial PSA’s. No station IDs.
FWIW, 96.7 in Utah County and 93.7 HD3 are still carrying “Utah’s Goat”.

Thanks for the info, Terry. I usually have no trouble hearing 1580 on the Northern Utah SDR during the day, so I'm wondering if the current solar storms are interfering with AM radio reception.

AM is cumulative.

?? I'm not sure what this means or how it relates to KWLO having a weaker signal in Northern Utah than it did 2-3 weeks ago, but it's definitely harder to hear 1580 now than when it was still airing Frank's repeating audio message.

1580 does not seem any weaker here in Murray.
But while I was checking just now I am hearing Frank’s loop again. Hmm….

You said "I'm wondering if the current solar storms are interfering with AM radio reception." Since AM is cumulative even if there was solar interference you would still be able to hear KWLO under it. Are you sure the SDR you were using is the same radio in the same location as before?
