1580 is still looping Frank's message. I can't hear Utah County's 99.9 because the SLC 99.9 is stronger here in Murray. As for 1400, I haven't heard anything there for more than a year.
For what it's worth, Frank's 96.7 is a little stronger here than it was say a month ago. (Or maybe the Tremonton 96.7 is a little weaker?)

IIRC, Frank said that KSRR is currently broadcasting with 100 watts and a temporary wire antenna, so I doubt the station is audible outside of Utah County without an external antenna. 1400kstar.com is registered to a URL with the heading "The Talk of Utah County", which meshes with Frank's plan to have a hyper local Utah County themed talk station on 1400 once the rebuild of the station's tower is completed.

Sorry, I have been swamped and haven't been checking in as much. I'm not privy to everything with the change, but I think the holidays just delayed things some on 1580/99.9. I expect it will change soon. I'm not sure why 96.7 would be stronger now, but I won't complain On 1400, yes, it's still on low power on what is actually a similar type of antenna to those they use for weather advisory stations. We actually had a property lined up to build a full tower on but couldn't get it work with the signal study. We've been talking with a different property owner and hope we'll see something come of it.

I think 1400 K-Star is going to have soft hits back on the AM dial on Mondays through Saturdays sometime in the near future. Utah's Goat 96.7 is giving away 2 $1,000 prizes during The Goat Grand Giveaway it was started yesterday, all they have to do is to listen 2 keywords during the 10am hour and the 2pm hour, then head to our website at utahsgoat.com, and enter to win during this nationwide contest.

This is at least the second time I've heard the internet rumor that the KOSY 96.7 soft hits format is going to move to KSRR, and I don't know how or where it got started. How about asking the man who owns KSRR & KQMB what his plans for 1400 K-Star are? Frank has said before that he's planning on putting a Utah County based talk/sports/community news format on KSRR, so how about some clarification from fmdj1? What's the format on KSRR going to be, and is the station still airing the Soft Sunday Sounds/LDS music until you can find a permanent AM tower location? Inquiring minds want to know! 😉

Frank and his wife have changed their minds before and certainly have the right to do so again if they want to. It's worth keeping in mind that it's often a bad idea to pre-announce a new format. You don't want your competitors to torpedo the new format before it even launches.

Very true, but quite frankly I don't think there's going to be too many competitors waiting to torpedo the new format on KSRR. Most people who are younger than 40 don't even know AM radio exists, outside of tuning to KSL or KNRS a time or two for emergency information or a breaking news story. Whatever Frank and his wife choose to do with KSRR, I wish them the best of luck.

A soft hits format would definitely fill a void. I know nothing about programming or funding a radio station but it seems like a music format would be cheaper than a news/talk/sports format but I also know nothing about royalty fees and all that so maybe paying the royalties for the right to use the music would be comparable to paying on air talent. I enjoyed K-Star the way it was before it went dark several years ago before Frank and Melanie took it over. It had, what would you call it?, a soft AC format with some talk shows thrown in at different times. I guess one way to do it would be to use the satellite network that 1430 KLO used before they were sold. Then you could just interrupt it whenever you wanted for the local news/talk/sports portion of things. Then run the Jeff Watkins/Glen Rawson Sounds of Sunday network on Sundays. (I might have those names wrong.) I wish we could get a true Music of Your Life type format back on the air locally somewhere with Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters etc. I know. Probably not viable but, to quote the words of a song that would play on a station like that, "I can dream, can't I?". Thank goodness for the internet. I can listen to KTUC in Tucson among a few others for a format like that but it would be nice to have someone doing that locally. Klassy KMGR is similar to what I'm talking about in Central Utah. I listen to their stream sometimes. Whatever the Muellers do with K-Star, it will be great and I think Frank said they'd be streaming which is wonderful because, living in Salt Lake, I can't get the 1400 signal. I'll echo what David said--best of luck with it.

From what little I understand about the subject from talking with some of my friends in the broadcasting business, payments for music royalties have increased substantially in the past 10 years. I'm sure someone like Frank that has firsthand experience in the industry could go into more detail, but I'm guessing that the increase in music royalty fees is one of the reasons that news/talk, sports, and other spoken word formats are the primary AM radio formats. I've always wondered if the stations like KLO, which broadcast the "America's Best Music" format, pay the music royalties; or if Westwood One and the other syndication companies pay the fees.

Regardless of whether it's paid directly or indirectly, the radio station will always pay any fees.

FWIW, the Utah's Goat and Kosy 96.7 sites appear to be infected with malware, so use caution when visiting these sites.

At least the main WordPress installation seems to be the latest version, but I don't know about the plugins and that's where the bulk of the vulnerabilities are. If there's a vulnerability the net's bad guys will find it. That's why friends don't let friends run WordPress (plugins).

Sorry, I've been busy and haven't had a chance to check in. Regarding the KSRR format, the hope has been local talk but first the station needs a full-power site, which has been tough to find. Regarding the site, I'm not aware of any malware. Yes, I've been using WordPress, mainly because it's very easy and being a small operation, we don't have the resources to outsource that. But I do try to keep both the version and the plugins up to date, for what it may be worth. I certainly don't want to be someone contributing to problems online, especially since I used to work in the webhosting world myself once upon a long time ago.
