Thanks for the information, Ken. I wasn't aware there were so many variables involved in getting 1060 back on the air. It's nice to have someone with experience in the broadcasting industry explain things in an easy to understand manner.
When you mentioned the possibility of having to make custom parts for the Continental transmitter, it reminded me of the time I had my ancient Afco furnace serviced at the beginning the heating season. The Afco needed a part replaced, and it's almost impossible to get parts for a 50+ year old furnace. As luck would have it, the serviceman was experienced with working on older HVAC equipment, and he was able to fabricate a replacement part to keep the old gal running smoothly for a few more years. Thank goodness for engineers and experienced repair technicians!🙂

Yep! Most older stations have/had a full-blown workshop (or two), at the transmitter or studio. A lathe, drill press, table saw, etc were always right up there with all the other tools and equipment.
Plenty of old parts, too. Never throw away an old part, unless it's totally dead. There are bulbs for the old RCA transmitter still in stock at Farnsworth Peak. They are stamped with "Ballard Supply" and a purchase date of 1952. Replacement meters, with the old RCA logo, too.
When KSL moved out of the old building across from Temple Square, one of the old towers was used to build Farnsworth Peak. A huge storm ("SOTC") took it down in a few months. The copper transmission line was salvaged and stored at Saltaire for 30 years. That line was used to make a three-legged, 40-foot ground rod for the Triad Center studios in 1982.

1060 is not on, and has not been on for many months. Anything anyone claims to be hearing is not KDYL. Trust me. I doubt it will ever be back on.

There was definitely a carrier on 1060 in SLC in daytime hours. It may or may not have been KDYL,
Edit: By the way, using the directional antenna on my receiver, the 1060 signal was coming from the general direction of the KDYL transmitter as shown on Radio-Locator.com.

Why would someone pay $50K for KDYL's license if they didn't intend to put the station back on the air? I think you may be confusing KDYL with KMRI. Besides, the only other station on 1060 within 300 miles of Salt Lake City is KBGN in Caldwell, ID, which is only audible in the early morning and late afternoon hours, at least in Northern Utah. I highly doubt that the long time members of this board who have reported hearing a carrier on 1060 are lying, as they have proven themselves to be reliable sources of information.

KDYL-AM has been on the air with only a carrier a few times over the last couple of months. It isn't able to make full power yet, but seems to be running a kilowatt or two, when it's on. They don't have a feed from the new studio location yet. They were on the air a couple of days ago, until around dusk. I was on the phone with their (unnamed) engineer, who was standing in front of the transmitter.
When they are not operating, it's possible to hear CKMX "Funny 1060", a 50KW station, out of Calgary AB, which broadcasts omni during the day, but with a broad cardioid pattern to their NW at night.
Now, if you are talking about 1550, I would wonder if they are making any progress.

wooget, trust is earned. Those that have been here for a long time have earned that trust. I also know who some of them are. This is your first post under this name, though yes I know you have several. I'd like to know why you think those who believe they hear KDYL are wrong.

😂 I know the two engineers working on it. It has been being tested off and on. So who do you know? 1060 is not on, and has not been on for many months. Anything anyone claims to be hearing is not KDYL. Trust me. I doubt it will ever be back on.

Am I hearing things, or is there a carrier on 1060 again this morning (Monday)? I'm also hearing what sounds like a test tone or a heterodyne on 1060. Anyone else hearing the same thing?

This afternoon around 2 PM, there was a very strong, steady carrier on 1060 for about 15 minutes. I'm located in NE Ogden, and the carrier was lighting up almost all the segments on the signal meter of my Panasonic RF-B60. Now let's hear some audio, please! 🙂

Heard some Spanish language programming on 1060 earlier this afternoon, which disappeared around 5:30 PM. I'm not sure if it was KDYL or not, but the signal was very strong and was dominating 1060 until local sunset time. As far as I know, there isn't any other Spanish stations on 1060 in any of the Western states. Radiounica1060.com is an active domain, but at present it's just displaying a "coming soon" message, with a space to enter your email address for updates.

What a rancid, festering turd pile this was for me when I was in Laramie, Wyoming.. a consistent low rumbling unflushable turd sound on 1060 almsot nightly over 300 miles away because KDYL was off frequency enough to cause a hetrodyne.

The last time they were on when I was monitoring, whatever transmitter was broadcasting was dead-on the frequency of 1060. I believe they said it was the Continental, and that nothing had been done to the carrier frequency since the off-frequency issues were noted. So, if just being turned off for months "fixed" the problem, I wonder how long it will be before it goes bad again. Scary!
