On the other board, user "Wiggle1" asked if there are any live overnight jocks as they work a graveyard shift.
I wanted to reply but am not on the other board.
Someone on both (Timmy?) please let him/her know that yes, there is one station! K-S-O-P 104.3 and I think it's our friend Christopher John, if memory serves. I'm not aware of any other hosted 12 am - 5/6 am shifts on stations in Salt Lake -Ogden- Provo.
Of course, KSL has a live person in the studio, but they're re-running Clark Howard at midnight and then syndicated stuff until G&A at 5 am.
Also, BBC World Service on KCPW is live, albeit not local.
Edit: Upon looking at X96's site (I forgot about their overnight shift) it seems they don't have anyone again after Artie disappeared they moved Corey to afternoons and AndyPants to nights. It also seems KSOP has someone else and "CJ" is evenings, my error.

X96, for the longest time had an overnight guy... andypants... He has his own unique style. Does he still do overnights? I used to listen to him (since he was the only live jock) when I was driving home from my 7-mid shift on another station back in the day.

I do 7pm-mid live on KSOP FM and I track the same timeslot on KSOPAM but John Greenwell does overnights live on the FM, I believe he has been doing it for something like 25 years.. I think X96 is still live all nights still???

How much longer do you think live jocks overnight will last? In the olden days it just wasn't feasible because Otto Mation just wasn't up to it. Today, if a pinch you could download Winamp and use it to run a station. With a little tweaking, it can even sound pretty decent. Of course a live jock (or even voicetracked) is going to be better, but does anyone even really push ad sales on overnights? I wonder how much station managers really care about Mid-5AM. Is it there just to keep the transmitter warm and get a few bucks from per inquiry ads?

Is it there just to keep the transmitter warm and get a few bucks from per inquiry ads? 1. Overnights really aren't sold. People use them for "low cost rotators" at zero-$5 for a 12a-12a or 12a-5a contract line to help a little with 'added value' or CPP raisings for a ratings buyer. 2. Nights are even hardly sold. I can tell you that on a top Seattle-Tacoma radio station, night time avails (8p-12a) are rate carded between $25-40 for a :60. Of course, they are probably sold for even less than that in special packages or again as a buyer is fighting a station tooth and nail despite reasonable rates and great frequency... *sigh* Some stations probably have 5 am to 12 am rotators, which are mostly going to run 7 p-12 a (or 5-6a, another lower rate hour) because there are just going to be spots with higher or dayparted rates taking the avails earlier in the day. 3. Haven't they even tried using "Otto" with rotating machines of cart-style tapes? I seem to remember a complex apparatus posted from Michael J's studios. Fybush needs to come back and visit the new K-P-C-W, though. I wonder how they are doing without Blair and the gang?

seattlefollower hit it right on the money The Lake's money time slots are the morning shift and actually from the 4pm til 9 pm slot Overnights are nothing in the $$ market for us. But we do have a a rotating night shift here..We use some interns from the college that live in the area for credits. Here's the kicker... we throw the format out on overnights and let them program it so one guy or gal will play hip-hop and dance and one might play country and the next could play jazz so from 10:30 pm til 5 am we are open format. Not sure how long it will last I'm hearing they might shut down the signal from 12 am til 5am due to the lack of $$ coming in right now. We are getting hit hard just as well as the big players around...Geez I might even be gone someday soon who knows

That's a pretty neat idea Pete, especially giving some experience to college kids. They're the future of the biz afterall, right? I do have to wonder if there's a downside though. Has anyone ever complained about not getting the "normal" format when they checked in overnight? Could that hurt your rep? Or maybe the positive word of mouth offsets any negatives? I don't know.

As a programmer I would have a hard time letting the kids play what they want, they will get used to that and when they are a decent sounding jock on a day-time program they will try to play what they want instead of sticking to format... BUT I am also on that thinks the format stations choose should be looser anyway...
We, here at little X94 used to do "Hard A** Rock" on Saturday nights from 10-2. It had to stop because things got so SCREAMO that business would turn us off. There were also people who would switch the channel because it wasn't their flavor... AND we know that once someone changes the channel, its not as easy to get them to change it back. I would just hope that there are limitations on how FAR the kids can take their formats. There is hip hop and then there is HIP HOP. Rock and ROCK if you know what I mean.

BTW, with my busy schedule I do overnights on X94, but they are pre-recorded.
