Just read in R&R that Bonneville canceled the iChannel network.
What's KSL running on HD2 now?

As dxstuboy mentioned on the TV thread, KSL-HD2 is running a 2 minute loop of local news and weather over and over. I'm guessing that they don't update it more than once a day.

Actually, if they've figured out a smart enough system, it's likely pulling it from their Web site here: pandora.bonnint.net/ which is the "KSL News Now" feed. Unfortunately it seems like they've decided to invest in the TV side for "fast casts."

There's nothing at the root of that server, but if you Google it you'll find the RSS feeds and MP3s.

"News Now" is just a temporary fill-in.

I can't see them giving the "air space" for the ethnic programming they will be in Chicago and DC though. www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS127019+17-Sep-2008+PRN20080917Same goes for St. Louis, what are they going to air there? Phoenix? Big enough city to probably support some "ethnic" programming, but probably not the type offered by WorldBand Media. I will note that two traditional AM stations licensed to Blaine and Ferndale, Wa. broadcast this kind of thing targeted at Vancouver, BC. So much for that whole "city of license" thing. On a related note, did Bonneville ever take KSWD "The Sound" in Los Angeles H-D? I suspect not and that is a very bad sign that the largest broadcaster that spends money on its stations infrastructure did not install an HD encoder.

I wonder if they could just re-air KSWD on KSL-HD2? That would be cool!
And if they ran KSL on KSWD-HD2.

I see two immediate problems with KSL on KSWD. The syndicated programming I'm sure has clearances in LA. The local news and talk is much too Salt Lake-centric to appeal to a decent sized audience in a major city a thousand miles away. What else is there?
Now the other way around would probably work better, though the tastes of LA and SLC are very different. What works in one may not work in the other. That would be worth a shot though, especially because it's practically free.
Ken, I wouldn't want to get you in trouble, but is there any idea you can give about what the long term plans for the substream would be?

The only word I got was a non-verbal "shrug". I'd opt for something with an in-depth news orientation, to match with KSL Newsradio. I might propose it, and see what happens.

If law and syndication agreements were to permit, how about running alternating "The Wall Street Journal Report" and "CBS [News] Weekend Roundup"? The latter is very in-depth and the other might be interesting since most people aren't up between 4 and 5 am M-F. Not sure if ABC Radio News makes some other long-form programs available that would work.

I thought a long time ago that rebroadcasting the last full hour or half hour of news in its entirety would be a good idea. That kind of thing is done on TV already, and it's virtually no additional cost. I was actually thinking of that as a use for KUTR when it was floundering before it was sold off.
All of this presumes that the IBOC signal continues at all.
