So, I guess we can debate. What do you like better: Singing Jingles or straight Pukey Voice Guys???
Singing Jingles are ok at first, but if people listen to a station for more than an hour a day... say at work or something, the jingles can get irritating. The Bull and FM100 used the same ones for years without being too annoying. I think the key is to make it as quick as possible... "Mix 1079" is quick, but when the starting singing "The Hit music channel... mix 1079" (or whatever it was, I tuned out!) it just takes too long. Example "Mix 1079, is everywhere..." all singing, that gets really annoying. I am only using the Mix 1079 link posted above for an example. "Utah's hit music channel... mix 1079..." too much.
With the pukey VO guy, you have to be PICKY! Many are successful and some blend in perfectly. The FM100 lady doesn't have all that great of a voice, but it doesn't seem to bother me. The ZHT voice, or at least the one I remember... haven't listened for a while, is used in many places because it works. I think a key to good VO work is to NOT be so Pukey. The classic oldies style was to dig deep down and accentuate (or puke) in a not so natural manner. Today, those who are successful are either women who sound sexy, the men who are naturally deep voiced, or the men who sound hip. The FM100 lady not following under any of those, so what do I know.
Debate! How wrong or out of touch am i?
Knowing the Mix 1079 crew I can easily see why they are so excited about their imaging. The Mix was thought of as the step-child of the Millcreek cluster (or at least it felt that way) so if they are getting more attention, ratings and otherwise, its good. Good Luck Dylan and Michel.

I think Bri, it's also about balance. The VO guy has to match the jingle. Blend it together and it's seamless ... you really recall what's sung and what's not because it's all part of one show.
I'll see if I can find some good examples.

The problem I have with that package is that it's just too long. You want a jingle that's 4-5 seconds long tops, with the possible exception of 1 over-the-top ID at the top of the hour. 7 is just too much. There's too much of a fatigue factor, especially with only a couple of dozen jingles to choose from. Other than that, it sounds good. I think it fits what the station is trying to be. It just needs to be more compact and not trying to upstage the music. I also agree with Bri. What the heck do I know?

Here's one example I've always liked. Very rarely do I find a voice-over guy that sounds smoother than a disc jockey. robontheradio.nfshost.com/audio/wxks.mp3(FYI - Thanks for subtly helping me find a good, cheap web host, CA)

I'm open to anyone giving some freebie liners and ID's for my little internet station: kxrt.wordpress.com Dry or produced. Pukey or sexy... just free. Thanks!

Aha! the R. stands for Rob! Also, that song has the best hook ever... I will add more to Brian's criticism later.

confused... UTRADIOGUIDE, was that an aircheck or you playing in your own studio? Sounded good, yes.
As a DJ, it is fun to be a part of a station with such tight imaging, especially those quick kickers with imaging on both sides, DJ in the middle. Example if I were, say, on the MIX:
(Out of Commercial set) (VO/singing) "Utah's hit music channel" (Upbeat music bed) (LIVE DJ) Another hour of hit music includes Britney, Akon, Nickelback, and Mr. J.Timberlake's Sexy back NOW (VO/Singing) "Mix 107.9!" (segue into SEXY BACK)
Thats fun, and honestly its the upbeat stuff like that that keeps me interested.

The first one (WXKS) was an aircheck. The second one (KUDD) was me playing with the jingle demo off the web site.
You are right, Brian, nothin' beats an uptempo bed to launch the music!
(Oh, and thanks for the compliment!)

The Kiss aircheck reminds me of Scott Shannon, though I'm nearly certain it isn't him. It's good, but I still worry about the fatigue factor. That's 30 seconds long! Imagine hearing that even 5 times a day for months on end. Wow. I think Bri's got a really good point. Having the DJ (or Otto Mation) do a custom insert each time would null out the fatigue issue.
And Rob, that sounded pretty good to me. (And you're welcome about the webhost. I love those guys.)
