or even just regular listeners. Help me out with a little problem.
I run the nightly show on a relatively upbeat station, where I have to stay on my toes the entire time. This is a six hour shift. Now, without being repetative, how can I keep the cleverness and information fresh? Listener interaction is good, I do that, but the calls vary night to night and to be honest, some nights are down right boring. Any help on staying fresh for the last two hours instead of burning out after the first 4?

Do you have the AP wire? If not, go to KSL.com (or any source of news) and just talking about "what's going on around town" tonight. You don't have to be a news reporter, but there's always something going on that your listeners would have opinions about and love to call in.
You don't have to be an expert, or a news reporter. Just know a headline or two that's been in the news that day. For example, tonight.... I go over to KSL and I see...
"Sheriff: It's highly unlikely thieves accessed personal information" Ah yes, the whole hospital ordeal. Just talk about it. If you are one of the ones who had your identity compromised, talk about it.
Say how you feel about it. Others will call in. Play their opinions. While it's not the focus of the show, it keeps it current - and you are doing a public service by keeping the public somewhat informed - but also giving them a place to vent and share some good laughs with you.
"Mother who left baby in car will face charges" You can respond... 'Do you guys think that's fair. I dunno. I think .... (etc)" Ask and ye shall relieve ... the lines will light up.
In the end XM can talk about the music, hollywood gossip, etc. But only you can talk about the local stuff.
You can also do a quasi-traffic service ... develop a habit of airing listener calls when there's wrecks that cause slowdowns late at night. It steals the KSL crowd away, which is a total plus for you.
Hope that helps. I'm no genius, but it may be a source for some cheap show prep.

Any chance of using some kind of a syndication service to juice things up a bit when they get slow? Most of them are mornings, so finding something that might work at night could be a challenge. Or you could market it as "AM in the PM". Anecdotally I've heard that's worked in some markets. Oh wait. You asked for a genius' opinion. You can ignore this post then.

Involve the listeners!!! I do a 6 to 10 show and it's all about involving the community We have fun, let them announce the songs,We let the High School students come in and guest DJ on Thursday nights along with us. We send out party patrol posse teams looking for fun and have them call back back in with party reports on Friday Nights.... It's about them "The Listener" Not Us BUT TO CLARIFY.......I'm not a genius (But my wife thinks she is)

I'm curious. Do you do any kind of delay when you have amateurs at the helm, or do you just hope for the best?

I appreciate all you comments. I am doing some brainstorming. Not sure if there is quite the party atmosphere in Utah as there is in Reno. But I will definately look into doing some of those things.

Anyway you can allude to where we might here your show? I assume you probably don't want to give away your identity. But we're smart, and probably can figure it out. Any hints?

Well... I guess the only hint I can give is that I am not live at the moment. I took another job that keeps me away from the studio during my show. I was willing to turn my show over to the weekend guy, but ownership thought I should stay and voice track. Against most of what I believe in, as far as radio goes, but when my other duties in town fall off around november and december, I will be back and live. Thanks for asking though I am going to work on a new format for when I come back live... AND HEY, at least I still do Saturday's LIVE.

Just in case there was any question, talking about a show you do or anything like that is perfectly acceptable. If there's another reason to not talk about something, of course I respect that.
