I'm just wondering how commercials would be sold or if its viable to sell them on HD sub channels, like HD-2 or etc. Seeing as how most of us thankfully still havent upgraded, whats the chance they don't consider putting commercials on those channels? Just curious, one of my random thoughts while driving to work this morning.

I've not heard any commercial on HD radio channels. I think that I read or heard somewhere that they all have pledged to be commercial free for a certain period in order to attract listeners.

Supposedly they have, but not everybody is actually doing that. The obvious exceptions are the FM stations that are simulcasting an AM on one of the IBOC's. (KNRS on KTMY springs to mind.)
A lot of the subchannels are also streamed on the web. All of that cost has to be absorbed somewhere. Radio companies aren't really known for their generosity. It's a business after all. It makes sense to at least have a few commercials here and there. Then again, KXOL under Simmons ran commercial free for years, so who knows.
