The stuff that's been going on for quite some time on the less popular channels baffles me. KPDR's 19.1 channel runs YouToo America. Nothing odd about that, but their Short Channel Name for some time has been "YO". I guessed maybe somebody accidentally chopped off the end of the network's name, but now the name has changed again and is "KP" which I can't figure out at all. What am I missing here? Then there's KPDR's 19.2 channel (RNTV). For some reason on an older ATSC to NTSC converter box the audio on this channel is dead air. On my native HD tuner it comes through fine. The technical specs of the data I'm receiving look exactly the same as the other streams but something is different. I just can't figure out what. And then there's the weirdest one of all. That would be KUTB-LD channel 18. I think it's supposed to be rebroadcasting something else (I can't remember which one) but it's been running no data at all for seemingly forever with one exception. Back around a month and a half ago I did actually catch programming on it. I remember there were 4 streams though I didn't recognize any of them. The next day it was gone again. The list of PID's (substreams if you will) is enormous. All but one are using .002 or .003% of the total data. The rest (about 77%) is just null data. In the words of Colonel Sherman Potter, what in the name of Marco blessed Polo is going on here? If delving into the technical weirdness of TV stations is interesting at all I can go into the odd behavior of the KSL-TV channels too.

Minor update: the "KP" finally dawned on me. I'll bet it's K-Powder as in the station branding. Took me a little while but I got there.

I remember seeing signals on the 18's in the past. But that's been a while ago. I think it was something out of a Logan station IIRC. Nothing came up on my last rescan in northern Davis county.

Doing periodic rescans can help sometimes (or sometimes hurt) but that doesn't always tell the whole story. If you have a Windows PC based tuner you can learn a lot by looking at the raw data with a program called TSReader (tsreader.com). There's a free version for home use if you want to noodle around with the data.
The problems continue though. This week alone I've seen some sort of problem with every one of the Salt Lake low power stations with the exception of KSVN-CD 25 and I can't confirm KUCL-LD since I can't get that from here. I've seen problems with 10, 18 (still null data), 19, 23, 50, and 39/9 (still off air after 6 months). KPNZ 24 was having problems too but he's on third and we're not talking about him. *sigh*
