KLO has added a new program to their schedule on Fridays from 10 AM-1 PM: Latter Day Radio with host Martin Tanner. It seems like a strange addition to KLO's schedule considering BYU's recent purchase of KUMT and their planned move of BYU Radio to 107.9, but it could be that Latter Day Radio is just a temporary placeholder for KLO. I'd imagine that hearing an LDS themed talk show instead of Rome surprised a few die hard fans of "The Jungle" this morning! Jim Rome is still on KLO from 10 AM-1 PM Monday-Thursday. latterdayradio.com/

Wow! I wouldn't want to be working at KLO's switchboard if this was 15 years ago or so. These days it probably doesn't matter much since anyone who's passionate about his show can listen on any number if his affiliate's online streams. I remember when Jim Rome was on KALL 910 and they decided to move his show to 2 to 5 PM running him on tape delay. I called their program director and asked him why. He said Jim Rome was a stronger product than I think it was glenn Beck at the time and so they wanted Rome in a time slot where more people were listening. He asked why I thought it should be aired live when TV stations tape delay the evening news and such. I said that people don't interact with the evening news. It's a call in talk show where people send, at that time, faxes and may also want to call in and talk about the topic where if you're running a show that ended an hour ago, the listeners here aren't able to do that. That schedule lasted two weeks and then he was back on live. I remember the big voice guy said "after thousands of emails and tons of phone calls the clones (what Jim Rome calls his listeners if you're not familiar with his show, kind of like Diddoheads for Rush) have spoken. Jim Rome is back on live." That seems like a weird move unless it's the ONLY time Martin Tanner could do the show. Why would a station only air four days of a five day a week show? It will be interesting to see how that works for them. It seems like most of KLO's attempts at "in-house" shows haven't done very well. I say in-house instead of local because I think Bob Lonsbury was doing his show for KLO from New York when he was on. There was also Mills Crenshaw and Merrill Cook. Walter Platts was doing a local show there for a while too and none of them have stayed for any length of time so, as they say ... stay tuned!

I think it would have been better if KLO had put Latter Day Radio on their Sunday schedule since it's a faith oriented program, but who knows what they're thinking. There's room for the program on Sundays if KLO dropped a few hours of their paid programming, but the radio infomercials are probably a good source of revenue for them. I doubt Tanner's show will be on KLO very long anyway. Merrill Cook's show barely lasted a month, and I don't think Mills Crenshaw and Bob Lonsbury were on for more than a year. Len Allen was the only local air talent that ever had any longevity at KLO, and he was gone by the time 1430 switched to a talk format.

FWIW, it debuted on June 1. I was thinking about mentioning it in the Jim Rome discussion but decided against it. You could look at it as evidence that more evidence Rome isn't a draw since they're dropping 1/5 of his schedule for this.
The thing that isn't clear to me is whether this is a KLO production or leased time. That makes a difference. The LDR mailing address is the Capitol Broadcasting facility in Salt Lake, but I don't know if they're just acting as a maildrop. Anybody know?
