Here's an idea I had this morning. We know that most radio stations (especially FM music stations) only pay enough attention to their public service programming to keep the FCC happy. That's why most of them get buried early Sunday morning when nobody is listening anyway. Still, it does take money to produce the programming.
What about this. Make a deal with a high school in the city of license to have the students produce the program talking about whatever major concerns in that town are. Pretty much every high school has some kind of a journalism class, right? This would be especially helpful for the rimshot stations where the offices/studios are far removed from the community they nominally serve.
BENEFITS 1) Since it's being produced in and for the COL, it's pretty much a slam dunk that it's relevant to the community 2) It's free programming 3) The publicity from having the high school kids on a really big radio station can only help ratings 4) It's free programming 5) You don't have to concern yourself with trying to figure out what people in the town are talking about 6) It's free programming
NEGATIVES 1) High school kids are probably not going to sound as polished as professional anchors. 2) Professionals might get put out of work
Anything I'm missing?
