A new AM, with 1kw days and 250w nights, will be coming to the valley. It will be at the same site that KFNZ currently uses

I thought the FCC wasn't licensing AM stations anymore? Sorry I noticed this thread late.

You can't just walk up and apply for a new station, that's true. You have to wait for a filing window to open. Then applications are taken for a certain numbers of days. This application was filed back on Jan 30 2004. There were actually a number of applications for 770 and 780 as I recall, and this one ended up winning (unless somebody appeals.)

And the losing bidder is still not happy. Not a big surprise. She's filed another request to get her application approved instead.

One reason I started in this business was because of an old friend back home, who had a radio station in his back yard when he was a teen, and later worked for several local stations. His dream was to own his own station. Recently, I found out that he had died a couple of years ago. I started "googling" his name, and eventually found details on his journey...he filed for a license about 20 years ago, and was immediately filed "on top of" by several well-heeled competitors. The whole matter dragged out in the FCC courts for about ten years, and he finally lost the bid, as well as most everything he had. He died living in a trailer, at the place in the woods that he had purchased to be his transmitter site, while living as a recluse. The "winner" of the license sold out almost as soon as they got it. It has been sold and resold numerous times, and is currently on the air and for sale.
