Hey, just a few days ago, Fox 13 announced that they'd be building a new set! And then maybe... I guess it was about 2 days ago now, from their new temporary set, they showed us some of the manual demolition that was being done to the old set! Whow, it's cool to watch that! I have that moment recorded.
I wish channel 5 had shown us theirs when they changed their newsroom back ground stuff about a year ago!
Happy Christmas!

Maybe they are going HD? It's been rumored for a while.

That's what I was wondering. It's about time.
By the way, what happened to the "Channel 4" 9pm news on CW30? My TV guides still list it, but it hasn't been on for a few days.

Okay, maybe they're going to HD. But what does that have to do with supposedly "needing a new set"?
Happy Christmas!

Ben Winslow reports that the station is going HD ("finally!"). I hope they are not putting in an automated control system, only because I hate to see yet ever more broadcast layoffs to automation.

If it's old it could use being refreshed. Also any flaws that were unnoticeable in SD could become really obvious in HD. Hopefully there will be more room on the new set as well. The whole "from news control" thing to me looked ridiculous. Why exactly would you want to show that you're in the control room other than you don't have any other space. (The control room by the way was through one of the glass doors to the right as you're facing the set. Or at least it was when I was last there 10 or so years ago.)
So where is the temporary set now? Anyone know?

Hey, how come ya ignored my comment about wishing people a happy/merry Christmas? Ughh! :-p
K-Star/KSRR 1400 AM is still playing all-Christmas music for these last few days of the year! Yayyy! They realize well enough that some people still need that for a few more days! I just wish they were on FM so we could get the nice quality.
Anyway, about Fox now:
Oh, well I guess that makes some sense: "As long as we're upgrading our signal in a major way, we might as well move up with an even BIGGER bang and have a new set at the same time!" It's not really required, but I can see why it could be fun to do that. I don't know how "not-so-well-built" the old set would have been, though, so as to have had HD-noticeable flaws in it. I bet this is just mostly because they want to have a BIG bang all at once!
Okay, hey guys, as backups of each other, can we all set our recorders for around New Year's Even through New Year's Day on that channel, for several hours, so as to catch the moment when they switch to the HD signal? Oh, hey, maybe I'll call them now so we can get a more certain idea of when the switch will happen.
This note about Fox 13's switch to HD soon should be posted on the Breaking News thread!
(CAwas: maybe something like, "Fox 13 News will soon be in HD!" And then maybe a note to scroll down to the point where it's mentioned here, and then of course the link--unless there's a way to do one of those "#" links that scrolls someone down automatically.)
Merry Christmas!

I guess they're still not HD... I was watching their coverage of the egregious Josh Powell horror on Sunday and they are still 4:3. What happened?

Because last I saw (and that was last night), they were not done building the new full-blown set, and if the suppostions here that they would switch to HD with the switch to the new set, then... well I guess that's why they're not in HD yet.
From what I remember seeing, they're still using the new interim set. I'll watch again tonight.

It can easily take months to rebuild a station. It doesn't surprise me a lot. It wouldn't surprise me if they were rebuilding master control (the central hub that runs the whole station) at the same time. I think they've been using a workaround for the 16:9 network stuff since it launched. You can see it pretty clearly when they switch between the network feed and locally originated stuff.

Yeah, okay, I'm watching right now and they are still using their temporary set.
As for rebuilding master control and stuff, that's really the part that fascinates me the most: rebuilding a sytem that you must keep in function at the same time. Ya just about have to have a whole new system being built in a "swap location," and then, once it's all built with dummy signals and all dry-run tests are done and pass with complete functionalty, wait until a usage valley (as opposed to peak) time and then quickly just swap your dummy ins and outs out for your live ones! That's something I wish I could be there to watch and record video of!
