Coming in this morning around 4:00 AM, I heard the Citadel TOC "Test Channel" on AM 1230 (KJQS, Murray). It was running test tones and voice announcements, from the "Citadel Technical Operations Center in New York". At 4:33 AM, I heard a local ID, "K-FAN 2, Salt Lake City". All other channels on AM and FM were normal programming (isn't 1230 a simulcast?).
Is this a normal thing for the old Monday morning "Experimental Period", or was there a problem?

1230 isn't simulcast anywhere I know of. Back when the KFNZ/KJQS duo was affiliated with ESPN the national junk stuff was cleared on 1230 and the good stuff was cherry picked for 1320. 1230 was basically used as a dumping ground for the stuff they needed to carry to get the good stuff. As of right now both stations are simulcasting, but it's the middle of the night. The Grizzlies website seems to say that the stations are not normally simulcast. (http://utahgrizzlies.com/grizzradio/broadcastinfo/)
I wonder if most of the 1230 schedule is just network feeds like it was under ESPN and Citadel is just running it out of a NY hub to save money. That happens a lot in TV and it would make even more sense in that kind of a radio station.

I checked this afternoon and 1230 and 1320 were definitely running different programming.

Saturday night I heard the operational message. It mentioned that without a working net connection nothing else would work. Maybe there's been a failure in one of the inputs in the automation chain and nobody's minding the store.

That's interesting. Why would a computer-automated radio station need a working internet connection just to be able to play its locally-stored programming?

It doesn't. The feed is on satellite from New York. There are multiple feeds but the only one you can get "in the clear" is the test feed to let you know it's working.

The test announcement ran for hours last night...I first noticed it on between 7 and 7:30 PM (tuning around a bit). It stayed on air past the time I went to bed at 10 PM. Never heard any local ID.
I woke up about 11:30 PM, to check out the weather situation. They were running programming then.
This morning, it was back to the test loop, but I heard an ID for K-FAN 1320 (with an Alema Harrington promo mention) at 6:30 AM, and a K-FAN 1320 ID at 6:50 AM....both under the test audio track. So, I'm assuming something got changed during the earlier "real" program, to make the ID's start showing up later. Maybe a "live body".
I called the Citadel SLC main number last night and got no answer. I also tried the K-BEE request line number, and got an intercept saying it was a long-distance call ?!?!?.

It was on the test feed again all day Sunday, but seemed to be back to normal around 5 or 6 PM. Did somebody from the station read this thread?
